Hi. After a bit of advice.
I'm about to start building up my Shan.
The headset on these is integrated tapered style - eg there are no headset bearing cups, the cups are machined into the headube.....so when fitting, the bearings push straight into the headtube.
Anyway, this is the headset I have:

I got this one because if you look at the questions about the product, someone has already asked if this would fit the Shan, and the CRC reply said it would.
If did a trial fit of the headset bearings in the frame last night. The bottom bearing is quite a tight fit but it will go in with a bit of persuasion. However the top one is quite loose, and I would say that I can wobble the bearing within the headtube side-to-side about 0.5mm.
Does anyone know if this is OK in such a headset - will it be ok once I tighten it all up?
Thanks.
I would be concerned about any play between the headset and the headtube having ovalised one frame in the past
Maybe the upper bearing is not so critical but personally I wouldn't be happy with it
Any play between the bearing and the headtube/headset cup will be taken out by the taper in both of them, so I wouldn't worry.
Play between the headset cups and the headtube, on the other hand, won't be, hence the ovalisation.
I've got this one in my Dartmoor hornet
