Crosser or 29er hard-tail?

4mile (uphill all the way) commute but I've the option of tarmac or off-road. Plus I'd be using it over winter

I'm not likely to want to do loads of miles on the road - to the extent of needing a road bike - but I don't want to just have a single speed and a five spot as my commuter. Nor do I want to really have to ruin the turner over winter

Obviously gonna test ride em before purchase - quite like the idea of a cross bike but probably only cos I've never had one
