haven't ridden my 5 in a few weeks and noticed that the freehub has got a bit 'sticky' in that if I backpedal the cranks (bike just sitting in garage) the mech takes the strain, rather than freehub turning. If I give it a wee forward push it's then fine, but after half a day or so (bike not ridden, still sitting in garage !)same thing. I'm sure it would be fine riding it, just curious as to whether it needs pulled apart and greased/bearings looked at. No play in bearing.
thanks
It's so easy to have a look inside I would have a peek.
Has it also gone quieter? Could be a damaged pawl.
strip clean and grease should sort it
check the plastic seal round the freehub is seated in it's groove all the way round. If it has popped out it will bind and cause stickiness - and let in watery gunk.
My money's on the outer freehub bearing being seized/very stiff.
Exactly the same symptoms here. Armed with the new set of hub/freehub bearings I will be taking mine apart in a couple of hours.
Here's how:

thanks all - will pull it apart tonight
Have a look here as well - I presume the chain and jockey wheels are free running?

foxy, yes, all rest ok, cheers
That's what mines doing, the outer freehub one is stuck so the whole lot is coming out as they've not been done since buying 2 years ago.
USe foxy riders link, the hope site doesn't actually tell about the freehub bearings in any great detail. I emailed them and got a resonse this morning that said drift them out and usea socket to put them back.
In the link what is the metal piece that is used to support the freehub? Is that a genuine tool or something home made. Looks a nice idea to protect the freehub while working on it.

Its actually the seal insertion tool:
Its in the hope drift kit.
You can also get a hope support bush if you dont want to use the wood supports: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=8031
Used to support and protect the hub/wheels when fitting and removing bearings from hubs.
Sorry for the hijack, but the end caps are completely stuck solid on my rear Pro 2. Tried clamping them in a vice and still can't get them to budge! I really need to get into the freewheel to service it. The annoying thing is they've been off before, but not for some time. Any tips for getting them off?
Spray a bit of GT85 or similar round the ends of them and persevere with the vice.
You might need to wiggle and turn the wheel as you pull it but the caps will come out.
