[#855684]

I am toying with the idea of a Trickstuff Excentriker BB on my old frame but it is mid 90s skinny steel and most HT2 style cranks are fat and ugly looking. Can anyone think of a pretty, slender crank for external BBs?

I'd not considered road cranks. Good call.

RF won't work as I am told the axle has to attach to the RH crank. Thanks though.

Huh?

How much do you want to spend? Extralite E-Bones?

why won't RF ones work? They'r 2-piece like everything else.

My vote for pretty cranks has to go to campagnolo ones though, they'r pretty pretty!

E-Bones look sweet but a shame to be having that anodizing off straight away.

Have just been told about DMRs Cr-Mo crank.

Importer tells me that the axle has to be attached to the right crank. RF use the left crank to hold the axle and the drive side bolts to that.

So basically you're going to put a set of pig-iron 3-piece cranks on a skinny steel XC frame becuase you're worried about aesthetics?

Aesthetics does come high on the agenda but i must confess that the DMR jobbers do look a mite industrial.

The importer of what tells you the axle has to be attached to the RH crank? The frame? I can't even begin to imagine why!

The E-Bones are really nice cranks, if you're a scuffer just put some helicopter tape on the arms. I'll wager the LH DMR cranks weighs the same as the whole Extralite chainset! Like Mr Agreeable I think you'd be pretty crazy to put those on a nice steel frame!

digs out tired old photo of lovely looking road cranks the the MTB again.

These are flipping ace, the BB can be stripped and re greased in 10 mins, and if you do forget that and bork the bearings they are availiable from most campag stockists for about £20 for the bearings. A better extrenal BB than dedicated MTB stuff by a long way. Shame some fudge packer nicked my bike really.

If you see my bike for sale let me know.

Put on a campag compact - veloce or similar - 110bcd so you'll be able to fit a 34+ chainring on. Though they join in the middle so not sure if that'd work with the EBB thing you're talking about.

It would be a waste to use a different BB on the campag stuff..and as clubber says it might not fit the same.

ps the compact comes with a 34t

Looking at the tech stuff for the E-Bones they appear to use a larger than normal axle. There goes that idea. Not sure about Campag. compatibility.

Do a search for that, it could be what your looking for as they sure did look lovely..

edit... here you go still chunky but quite fetching I thought.

The axle thing makes naff all difference- the whole of the axle has to go through the BB as both sides are the same diameter. The importer is talking rubbish.

Maybe it's an issue with tightening and adjusting the Excentriker and the importer's not talking rubbish......

I'm sure singular sam used a campy crank with his Excentriker.

Just heeding the advice I am given by those in the know. If you have the Excentriker and know otherwise then that would be a help and would increase the options.

I have similar polished M952 cranks on the bike at present. Shiny stuff does look great.

How about Bontrager cranks? I've got them on my SS, and they're a really nice shape, and quite shiny, not too heavy, either.

It could be that the excentriker is very slightly wider than standard which would work fine with shimano since you adjust where the LH crank attaches but no good with something like the RF design for which the BB width is pretty critical and being 1mm out would cause all sorts of problems.

Surely it just bottoms into the splines? Or splines into a bottom? Or something?

How about Bontrager cranks?

Truvativ manufactured so the axle is wrong for this system.

clubber is right, I built my own excentriker (haven't got any pics at the moment) and used it with RaceFace cranks, but tightening them too much resulted in a lot of drag. It works, but not perfectly, but one could always play around with slightly thinner than 2.5mm shims as sold by VeloSolo.
At the momemt, I am trying to fit 105er cranks on that self-made excentrik bottom bracket, should work fine as you can adjust the exact porition of the left crank arm, a bit like heasdets.

How about some Surly Mr Whirly cranks? They ain't pretty, but they don't look like a chocolate eclair sprayed silver.

If it were me, I'd buy a Forward Components version rather than an Excentriker... search this forum for my reasons why and my experience/comparison of the two.

I used Ultegra HTII cranks with my Excentriker without any trouble so I don't quite see why the RaceFace ones wouldn't work. The Ultegra road crank will only fit a 68mm BB shell and worked fine while the Race Face MTB cranks will fit on a 73mm BB shell... sounds like importer rubbish to me.

Also, bear in mind that a regular MTB triple crankset will only work if you file off the inner chainring mounts.
