Hi, read a recent post on this so aware how to protect the HT/BB. I have a question about how people recommend on protecting ISCG tabs from the blasting, has/have everyone else just put the bolts in loose and hoped the threads survived?

As far as coaters I chose gary bevien (probably not spelt correctly) if you've used them / have any other local recommendations please shout!

I leave an old bottom bracket in and bolts in the water boses.

I would put some bolts in the tabs. Then bin them afterwards

They can mask the mounting surfaces and/or put some cap head screws in them surely?

A good powder coater who has done bike frames before should know what to do. When I took an old full suss frame to Garrick Coatings near Preston, I didn't even need to mention masking - he just started up talking about it.

@mtbtomo would you recommend them then? Color selection good? I go to uni there so it may well be a good consideration.

I've had a few frames done by Carl at Stockport Powder Coating in Hallam Mill (Opposite the Bamford Arms on the A6) and the results have always been good. You'll need to do the masking bits though as he's not a bike specialist.

I have used Chicago and Gary Bevan powdercoaters previously.

Chicago , very cheap and put a nice thick coat on but not so great at masking so a lot of cleaning up of threads after and pretty limited with colours.

Gary Bevan easily as good as Chicago for the finish but bigger choice of colours and masking was better, I had 2 frames & forks done by them and finish is great on both.

Have heard mixed reviews on Stockport powder coating and takes forever to reply to emails.

I will be sticking with Gary Bevan for the future

Ryderredman - it was a couple of years ago now, from what I remember, the majority of RAL colours were on offer. I got the recommendation from a colleague who had previously had motorbike frames and car parts done there before. I went for Kawasaki green (a quick google suggests RAL 6018) as below (photo doesn't do it total justice):

From discussion with the chap there, he masked all the bearing surfaces / mating surfaces, head tube, bb was sorted with some old cups. I forgot to request the seat tube so had a bit of clean up to do on that, but that was my fault really that I didn't specify it. I think he got the original paint stripped somewhere across town, cos he wanted to be more careful with it being an alloy frame. He came across that he knew what he was doing and had done some local DH racer's Orange 222 or something like before.

Don't think they had any of the fancier colours (such as the glittery ones) that some places offer but then I didn't really ask, and be aware that powder coat on its own isn't as completely glossy as a factory finish - unless it is lacquered in addition. The finish on this was uniform, smooth and thick though, so I was happy.

They also have painted samples to view if you go down their office, so you can see for yourself what finish you will get.

Thanks tomo and everyone for your replies.

I called up and they were cheap but I also rang the LBS and they recommended garie Bevan. Took it down got to see all the colours and Dave said he had the perfect colour for me, might have it by the end of the week. They also said they do loads of frames and that they have all the plugs for BB HT etc. Looking forward to it!

Was cool to get to see all the painters and weird smokey wall sucky outy bits 😀

Was quoted £40 for it to be blasted and powder coated. That was for a hard tail. Dont forget to factor in new decals though!

@Ryderredman

Any pics of your frame since you had it coated?
