[#258012]

I'm flying out on holiday tomorrow and I was planning on taking my ayups. However, the thought has just struck me that they might look a bit suspect on x-ray or whatever at the airport. Anyon else travelled with bike lights? Better in hand luggage or the hold?

if in doubt, just stick them in the checked in bag.

They should be fine in your hand luggage.
If they are not sure about them, they will just get you to take them out of your bag and demonstrate what they are.

Is something in checked baggage less suspicious than something in hand luggage?

I'm putting all my bike bits in the hold luggage on my way to Oz.

Don't want to find at security that they think my bike bits are potential terrorist implements. Bit of a joke really - I could do a lot more damage with a metal ballpoint pen.

don't know, but i always assume that if it looks vaguely weapon-like they're less likely to be worried if you have no way of accessing it than if it's at your side.

i doubt they look suspicious to folks t'other side of the screens who know what they're looking for.

Thanks captain, great answer.
Q, should I do 1 or 2?
A, do 1...or 2.

Only reason to carry them (and any other expensive bits) with you is if your hold bag gets lost en route. If you have other critical/expensive stuff in your hold bag anyway you might as well put everything in there. Just check what your travel insurance covers - if the airline lose your bag the maximum they have to cough up is something like £150 per bag regardless of what you say was in there

I was held back at airport security in Spain because I had put my DMR V12 pedals in my handluggage. They must have thought they were some kind of weapon that potentially could cause a lot of damage (true I suspect if you thinking of your shins...) I would have been gutted if they had confiscated them but thankfully, due to me looking as sweet and as weak as I possibly could, they let me keep them.
