Right,

I'm off to Porthmadog 1st week of September, I'm trying to work out where to spend 1 day/afternoon riding.

Do I, go to CYB and smash something out there or do the natural loop around Pont Scethin, of which there are a couple of GPX files knocking about for.

Any other recommendations welcomed, Dont want to drive too far if possible and I will be riding solo so that may be a factor.

There's a lot of excellent riding really close but it's all illegal so if you must insist on being naughty get an OS map out and head for the hills.

Edie: Pont Scethin is amazing dry but if it has been raining (and let's face it that time of year the chances are high) don't bother.

nant and penmachno are just a short drive away. Scethin is a bit of a classic, i like starting at Talybont and going clockwise, you basically start at sealevel plus a handful of metres. Good if you can time your last descent with the sunsent.

Then theres North Wales............. ๐Ÿ˜€

This looks interesting, quite an additional mileage to the 12 mile Pont Scethin I was looking at.

Anyone done it?

Illegal is a strong word, I'd say "contentious".

What's the local attitude to cheeky riding like though? I'm also a freqent visitor to Porthmadog and area.

(Pronounced "port-madoc" AFAIK)

Snowdon is almost as close as Coed y Brenin though you're still in voluntary ban season so evening ascent is best. Also great riding in the slate quarries etc above Llanberis. Can be linked with Telegraph Valley and a bit of cheeky stuff. A little further and you've Cowlyd, Capel Curig and Betws-y-coed.

Let us know if you want a local guide ๐Ÿ™‚

Its PorthmadoG. As per the sign.
It's the same as riding other footpaths in England and Wales.
Not really ideal but some amazing trails.

jaffejoffer - can't work out how to PM you through the site so here goes

Based Waunfawr - between Caernarfon and Llanberis. Can often work on very short notice as long as I'm not already tied up. And (very reasonable ๐Ÿ™‚ )rates on my website www.mtbguiding.co.uk but deals can always be done ๐Ÿ™‚
Thanks for asking

Next time I'm at the inlaws I may well hit you up. I'm dead keen to ride more natural stuff round there but I'm bobbins with a map, and usually alone!

There is some riding to be had above penryndaedraeth nr Porthmadog heading towards llyn Mair.

Also a green lane running from croesor down to nantmor

Also some unofficial stuff in the vicinity of the meantwrog power station. ( allegedly)

A new bike route has also opened around the trawsfynydd lake, the visitor centre cafe is run by antur stiniog, have a chat with Simon the manager he knows the area well.
