So I have a shiny (new to me) XTR M971 Rapid Rise rear mech.
The issue is that the angle between cable outer entry and cable to the pinch bolt on the mech through 6 of the 9 gears is quite 'steep' - only on the top two gears does it not rub against the cable entry slot or add extra friction.
Adding a new cable and outer today, and after one ride it has rubbed the cable end seal through ๐
(not my image, but you get the idea...)

Indeed, however I would expect better of a 'top' item.

I've thought the same of cheaper mechs before
I have a dura-ace mech that's probably 30+ years old and that has a little swivelly eyelet

And that's where you went wrong..... ๐
I would have though having a cable entry at a slight angle, to 'split the difference' would be better...
(Or maybe top racers only use 7/8/9 )
scotroutes: saw this and thought of you..

That should have been shifters.

They've mended it on M980.
I've run these for 4 years on two different bikes without this problem. Perhaps some set up work?
It will work OK, just more friction and a poor bit of design I thought.
I had an Inbred frame where the placement of the cable stop for the front mech resulted a similar angle. It was absolutely fine.
have you checked you fitted it properly, as rapid rise is errr, different?
Fitted right and proper.
Something looks a bit wrong with that gear cable. They're not usually that colour or so straight.
