Hi All,

I came off the bike about 3 weeks ago in what can best be described as a "right rib plant." The accident had enough energy to have me on the ground feeling sorry for myself for about 2 mins and the back wheel will need to a visit to my LBS. I self diagnosed a bruised or cracked right rib so decided to rest, but a week later the pain had moved to the left side of my chest and become very severe. Doctors were concerned it may be a pulmonary embolism but with subsequent tests, diagnosed pleural effusion. They're mystified though as to why it's on the left lung when the trauma was clearly to the right. They're speculating now that the two events are coincidental, but I'm dubious.

I'm mystified too. Has anyone else within this learned community had a similar experience?

Thanks.

I work in respiratory medicine, pleural effusion is rare in healthy adults, and usually due to infection or trauma, although it would be odd to have effusion on opposite side to trauma.Do you smoke?
