sorry if this is a bit of a novice question.
i am having a problem with my gears well one gear. when i am in the hardest gear the chain keeps slipping this only happens when under load and if i go up a gear there is no problem. the derailleu is a shimano slx 10 speed and the bike has done about 400 to 500 miles

thanks
adam

Could be the derailleur is not adjusted properly - the end stop is not set correctly or the cable is too loose/tight.
Alternative is the cassette is worn but this is unlikely as you say it happens in the hardest gear - smallest cog I assume - which rarely wears - it's usually the largest cog that wears first.
There should be plenty on youtube showing how to adjust derailleurs.

sorry to hi-jack a thread...

got a similar problem

2 x 10 setup

running SLX rear cassette, xt long mech. slx front mech and a kmx x10-93 chain..all 5 months old. (chain 4 months) seem to get alittle slipping under high load doesn't seem to matter which of the lower gears am in. i have looked at the alighnment of the rear mech can't see being out....rear cassette doesn't look worn and the chain looks good. anyone any suggestions?

ps am changing the rear mech in 2 days for an SLX shadow+ job.

what did you ride the 4-500 miles through, easy to trash it if it was wet & gritty ๐Ÿ™‚ (miles is a good road measure but useless in mountain biking)

Reset the gears
Check cables
Measure chain for wear

I assume it is the rear gear slipping? On the smallest cog?
Possibly high/outer limit screw not adjusted correctly, so it's pushing the rear derailleur in?
Does it happen regardless of what front gear you are in? Is it worse when using the granny ring at the front (cross chaining)?

could be a bent or broken tooth. I had this prob on a cassette where the damage was really difficult to see. one slightly twisted tooth on the smallest rear sporcket. also had a similar situation with a tooth broken off the large front chainring. that was easy to see - I just wasn't looking in the right place!

+1 for a thorough clean of cables, chain, cassette and derailer; lube chian and mech; then resetting adjustments before doing anything else - could be a random lump of grit

It's unusual, but not unheard of to find the outer sprocket has cracked, causing it to slip on the freehub too.
