I have a fair bit of play in my right XTR M970 pedal. Where do I get new bearings from and can it be done without any special tools?

Easy to sort.
Take the pedal off. Place in a vice and undo the nut, the axle will come out. Check for play in the bearings, if there is any adjust the nuts so there is no play.
Then....fill the pedal with grease and screw the axle back in. This will purge all the old grease with new. The seal is designed to allow grease out. Great design, simple to service.
I very much doubt you'll need new bearings.

Shimano do a tool for doing up the bearing locknuts, it's stupidly expensive but does make the job easier.
