I've got a SRAM rival crankset on the CX bike with the standard SRAM GXP BB, and noticed that there is a bit of lateral movement in the crank arms. Not terrible, but definitely there. I've tightened up the non-driveside bolt, but there is a still a bit of play.
I'm assuming that the GXP BB has had its day. It is only 4 months old, but I wouldn't be surprised, as it's had a wet and muddy winter of CX racing. Time for a new one, or anything else to be done first?
What's the opinion on new BBs anyway? Spend the extra for Hope and a GXP convertor, or treat the GXP ones as disposable and replace every winter?
Assuming the BB bearings are on their way out (bike funds are presently a bit tight), much harm in running it for another month? Presumably I am only wearing out an already worm out GXP BB?
IMO, throw the GXP setup in the bin and move to Shimano.
Assuming that isn't an option (i.e I don't have funds to swap out a perfectly good set of SRAM crankarms for some new Shimano ones), would you therefore suggest that a Hope or other BB is going to be better than another SRAM GXP?
i dunno sorry, i used 3 SRAM GXP BB's in the past.. all went fairly badly.... so i moved away.
not ideal but normal, its just bedding in. All it needs is a thin spacer between the frame an bb cup. I think crc sell them....

Fair point. I've already got a slim one in there from new to take up the slack (although I'm told I shouldn't need one on a CX frame), but I'll maybe bung another slim one in and see if it will take up the slack and keep the BB going a while longer.
I think the tolerance on frame bb width they work on is much tighter than most frames, hence the bad reputation...
IMO, throw the GXP setup in the bin and move to Shimano.
