Hi chaps,

I bought a new BB a while back, installed it (73mm shell, so 1x2.5mm spacer on the DS). With the preload cap finger tight there is play.

This is with standard Shimano XT cranks, used as a double.

I've sent the BB back to the shop for a refund, but it appears the BB is fine when installed on a shop bike. I've no reason to doubt them, as they're a very decent shop.

The problem is, I checked the same configuration on my frame with a Shimano XT BB and a Hope BB, and didn't have any play.

Has anyone experienced this? It'd be odd to have play in a new BB, but when rocked side to side with the crank arms you can feel about 1 - 2mm of play.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Ricks

Have you measured your BB shell with vernier callipers to see if it is 73.0mm or something else close?

At the risk of sounding like I am teaching you to suck eggs, you did knock the driveside crank right through and the non-drive is fully on? Sometimes it takes a tap with a rubber mallet on the drive side to ensure the axle is all the way through.

Yep - not checked with callipers to check the actual width, that was my only thought that the tolerances on the BB are slightly out and the the BB is sensitive to it.

It's on a Turner frame - so I'd be surprised if they'd managed to get that wrong though.

I may have to try using a smaller spacer, as I do have some 1mm ones - maybe take off 0.5mm?

I was assuming that the play would be caused if the cap was bottoming out on the thread of the axle - i.e. there was too much axle... could it be caused by not enough then?

Cheers

if you're only doing the preload up a bit then if the arm with the axle on isn't seated properly wou'll still have play.

As MisterP said - tap the end of the axle to make sure it's seated correctly before trying to preload the bearings.

cheers chaps,

I've tried tapping the axle through, it mates up fully against the NDS bearing race, plastic bit lifted. preload tightened finger tight (with gloves on, so tight).

May try a different set of cranks too then, just to rule tolerance on the crank out.
