I've just put new (used) forks on my bike and now there is a bit of play in the hub. With the old forks, revs, this play was there if I didn't do the axle up tight but disappeared once nipped up. With the new bombers I can't nip them up. Even with the axle as tight as I can get it there is still play. The forks are exerting no sideways pressure on the hub. I can freely spin the axle spacers. Are the bombers just too darn stiff? The bearings feel fine. It's a 20mm axle. Any ideas?
Just had a closer look and there's almost a 1mm gap between the outer edge of the hub spacer and the inner face of the fork before the axle is tightened. Doesn't seem right.
On my Fox 36s , you need to keep the compression gap squeeky clean at the bottow of the fork legs, or else when you do up the axle clamps any dirt in there will stop it tightening and allow a bit of play in the hub.
What year are they?
When 55's first came out (08ish?) I remember some having dodgy lowers where the axle would bottom itself out before fully clamping on the hub encaps.
It's been a while but ISTR they made a revised axle for them - might be worth checking.
They are pretty old and the thread does look short. I'll keep an eye out for a replacement and maybe look at a shim based bodge
