Planning to ride back to my hometown on Christmas eve, from Brighton to Wokingham, and wondering whether to plan the route in detail now, or simply set off with GPS on the phone and follow a loose set of place names?
Any tips appreciated? Any good websites that may help? Even better if someone has ridden that route or similar and can suggest a picturesque/non-scary route?

tear a page out of a road atlas.
Prepare pace notes and study towns villages that are marked on signs.
I just list junctions and which way I should go. It doesn't take that long to run over a route on google maps and if anything seems tricky you can now go down to street view.
I always plan new routes in detail using [url]www.bikehike.co.uk[/url] and upload to my GPS. Much easier to plan a pleasant route on quieter roads from the comfort of the sofa, and allows you just get on with cycling rather than worrying about navigation.
