I'm thinking of getting aroad bike for some training. Has anyone got a Planet X SL Pro and are they any good?

I've just bought a 2nd hand one and it seems "good".

Its light and smooth and is fairly comfy and quiet. It also looks nice.

I am comparing it tom my last road bike though, which was aluminium and pretty cheap.

The best thing about the planet x is that it was 10 gears rather than 8, and I dont have to take my hand off the bar to change gear.

I am 6'2" and have the XL. I think the top tube is quite long because I am now using a 90mm stem. I also run the seat very high.

Might do a TT this week and see if its any faster than my other bike.

Bllody hell they are light; 17lb for a Ultegra build. Now how does that not snap when it hits a cattle grid at 40.

The sizing is pretty small; I had to go for a large when I'd never consider anything other than a medium on a mountain bike.

There's a bit of flex in the frame; in fact if your still cranking it at 42mph then the top tube and down tube give some very odd feedback.

It's good for the price but there's a reason none of the big brands can deliver their carbon frames at the specification Planet X do.

Some people find a creak coming from the BB bracket under cranking; i found this to be the front mech cable passing through the BB shell and rubbing on the carbon. simple solution; use an cable sleeve where the cable passes through the frame.

They're fine little bikes. I raced mine and found no fault with it. I've also packed in a lot of long rides on it, all without fuss. I've not noticed any flex or odd noises and it's a tough bike as well.
Mines a small with Ultegra except the Carbon cranks.

Are you sure about the mud guards? What about the sporty (market hype) SKS versions that are a PoP to fit - via rubberesque bands: I've used them for yonks an a few road bikes (including Addict).

Fit em snugg under the brake unit (can be done) or tight up to it...they're quite good 🙂

Thanks all. I'm 5 10 but prefer an upright ride should I go medium or large?

I'm 5 11; medium was too small.

SKS raceblades interfere with the down tube cable runs; you have to really butcher the mount frames down to make them fit and even then they are pretty ropey. After loads of swearing I've managed to make Crud Road racers fit; hasn't rained yet for me to try them thought........there I've said it. I look forward to my 2hr wet commute tomorrow.

Mine has just started creaking. I might sound stupid but what do you mean by cable sleeve?

See the cable end with the extension? I've used one of these going from the top hole. job done; hasn't creaked yet.

I was buying one of these but was not happy when they stuck the extra £200 notes on them and its not a full red sram group set.

grantway - Sram red sl is still only 1099. It's just red shifters and mechs, but still a fantastic deal.

excellent bike, difficult to fault it at all regardless of the price and not much else (boardman team carbon maybe) compares well against it at around 1k. i'm 5' 9 1/2" on a medium, with an inline seatpost, 120mm x 10 degree stem and compact (shallow drop) bars, 20mm of spacers under the stem. thats a fairly relaxed upright position.

I bought the SRAM red when it included the cranks etc.

I am 5'11 and ride a large. My first road bike so nothing to compare it too, but I love it 🙂

Mine however has also started creaking from the bottom bracket area. Not had chance to check it out yet but will do at the weekend.
