[#862521]

Been quite a few posts on here recently about PX, Ribble Sportives etc.

Know the Sportive frames are supposed to be a bit more upright etc for comfier rides but I wanted to know if anyone has heard if the PX frames are harsh or whether they are at the more forgiving end of the scale?

I have one and don't find it harsh at all. I haven't much road bike experience and yes, compared with my friend's Pinarello it feels a little twitchy at times, but I have a skinny arse and an SLR 135g and can easily spend 6 hours in the saddle.

No not harsh at all.
I don't really know were this term comes from with regards to carbon frames. Usually people talk about stiffness as a quality in carbon frames, a good one by the way but not harshness.
If you want harshness! then I guess the old all Alu frame and fork bikes with 20c tyres were pretty 'harsh'.
Looking at some of the press recently it would seem that the top sportive riders i.e Lloydy and co are turning to pure race geometry. After all isn't the point of a sportive to go as quick as poss over a given distance.
BTW I know nothing of sportive and it's bikes and not ever done one.

There's a review of the PX on Bike Radar at the moment. They say it's a bit flexy and doesn't corner as well as some things, but is stunningly good value for the money, in short.

I posted up on a thread about these bikes a bit back.
There was a lot of too and throwing about which was best for the job of Sportives. In conclusion I think opinion was for the Ribble. However, Planet X come along with a cracking deal and suddenly it's back in contention. All the 'Ribbles best because of this or that' is out the window because the bike that was deemed less suitable for the job is now good VFM.
Not aimed at the OP of that thread BTW.

It's a cheap carbon frame with cost of complete bikes being its major selling point. Buy it and ride the thing into the ground, loads of people race on them without too many complaints. They are £400 FFS! so don't expect too much.

I find the geometry on the Planet X SL Pro more relaxed along side comparative models that I've seen/ridden. It's certainly not as aggressive as many other machines out there which does make for a comfy long ride by design. In answer to the original question though, definitely not a harsh ride IMO.

I've put nearly 2000 miles on my Planet X SL this year and have enjoyed every minute. If I had paid twice as much for the frame I would still be happy. I mainly ride 100 mile sportives but I'm quite competative and find the comfort/stiffness just right for such events.

Another thing to note; my Planet X arrived 2 days after I placed the order, I have a friend who waited 4 months for his Ribble Ribella to arrive, Ribble are quite well known for not being upfront about the lead time on their frames. Ribble frames are made by Dedacanti in Italy.

Just a point on the last post by bhallworth; I am pretty certain the sportive is not made by Dedaccai although the the Nero / Ribelle / a n other are. The sportive frame is made elsewhere.

My mates dad has a Ribble Sportive, although over 70 now he was a top level roadie in his time. Reckons it is the best bike he has ever ridden.

it's Dedacciai not "Dedacanti" or "Dedaccai".

it's triangular

that's what it is

road bikes should be made of round tubes 🙂

Just stuck an Ultegra wheelset on mine, wicked bit of kit. Got to wait until March to see what it's like in a road race though. Been side lined all this year, probably why I'm so arsey.

I wont knock the Ribble, after testing it breifly I thought it was a great bit of kit.
However, when I was out today it was hellishly windy and being able to get low in the drops on long sections of road was a real asset.

oldgit - how rude. Are you accusing me of allowing a bargain to sway my judgement? 😉

To be fair, my initial reservations re the harsh, racey orientation of the Planet X have been very much eased by all the positive reviews/forum posts I've seen. The general consensus seems to be in give a very nice ride. My one remaining concern is purely cosmetic but I'm getting used to it.

And the idea of a bargain setup certainly helps 🙂

I've got a PX SL bike. It's my 1st proper road bike (well, since I had a 5 speed "racer" as a kid) so I don't have much to compare the ride to. The longest ride I've done on it to date is 100km - I was tired after it but not beat up.
