Hi,
I need to fit a new crown race to my Reba's.
From what I've read this is fairly easily done by seating the race square, fitting some plastic tube over the steerer and gently tapping into position.
My question is - what size plastic tube does the trick - and where to get some?
Thanks!
Oh any any tips about removing the old crown - other than gently tapping round with hammer and screwdriver?
White plastic plumbing pipe available from homebase (B+Q) etc It's helpfully sized in Imperial.
I bought a crown race removal tool from ebay for 20 and a bit pounds to take away the anxiety of carving bits out of my nice SID World Cup forks with a hammer.
Thanks - what size would I need? Is the steerer tube 1 1/8 inches?
I've found that a section of old Vacuum cleaner pipe normally works on 1 1/8 inch steerer tubes.
+1 vacuum fitting

Now why didn't I think of that? Was scouring the house yesterday for a suitable sized pipe/tube, did I think to look in the cupboard for the old bit of vacuum cleaner pipe that lurks there (from god knows when and for god nows why!)? No, I did not... ๐ ๐ณ ๐
Great! We have Henrys at work!
Normally a 33 or 34mm copper pipe does the trick
Do you need to bash it on? I've just cut one of my unsplit crown races with a hacksaw to simplify swapping forks. All AheadSets basically work in the same way so a split race either works for them or doesn't as far as i can see.
Good point simons, most of my FSA headsets have split rings, not all so though about cutting the whole ones BUT will hacksawing leave a clean enough finish and is the gap/split going to be too big?
I'd use plastic waste pipe rather than copper, less likely to damage the race. Oh and you can use the same waste pipe to make spacers for SSing.
I smoothed it off with Wet&Dry. Seems fine so far.
2nd here for plastice pipe with a healthy amount of duct tape wrapped around the bottom where it comes into contact with the race. Do a google search on home made crown race setting tool and you should find the exact size but a clue is in the size of your steerer, just think a little bit bigger ๐
