I would have thought that media blasting would make it a bit dull, I guess some types might actually make it shiny.

WOuld you not be wise to get the threads etc redone after going at it with nitromors and wire wool just to be on the safe side. I mean while you've got the frame stripped off you might as well.

My Giant Trance will soon be raw going by the amount of cable rub, well as soon as the DOT 4 leaks out of the brake hose it will. 😐

Not sure why things would need re-threading. There shouldn't be paint in the threads anyway. I've not had to touch a thing on mine. Came back from being dipped, I gave it a very light buff with fine wire wool and built it back up....

Nice one. Can I ask what colour you got it dipped in? Just 'raw'? Or is there no such colour and it's an explanation 😛

Think you got the wrong end of the stick. Dipping is what is done to remove the paint. Its dipped in a big bath of nasty chemicals and the paint falls off. My giant was white before it was dipped. 'Raw' means raw, no paint, just bare aluminum or steel.

Yes; we're in communication. Thanks.

What's the stem?

Thomson 50mm/0deg Elite X4.

My email is in my profile if anyone has Qs. I don't want to conduct any more sale inquiries on a forum thread.

Epicyclo - Just gotta say, I saw that pic of your Ultra Niche on Saturday and haven't been able to get it out of my head since.

Superb-looking bike and one I would love to see in motion...

Once you've stripped the paint off the frame, is it neccessary to apply some sort of finish, rather than leave bare metal?

This took bloody ages using the nitromors and elbow grease method:
[img] [/img]

But then I got this done to it, which made all the faff worthwhile:
[img] [/img]

My advice to anyone would be not to do it yourself. I'm glad I did but I'd never do it again.

Yeah I paint stripped my Raleigh night burner to leave the chrome finish underneath and it was hard work.

Godzilla no clear coat no.

Pease I think it can be done with caustic soda but you will need to be careful and your warranty will be worthless. If you want it powdercoated, I'm pretty sure you can just do it over the anodising.

yeah thats cool. kinda why i was thinking about powder coat rather than trying to get it back to the RAW finish. would be good to find somewhere that does a good job but also doesnt take an age as i only have the one bike.

I went for the raw because I didn't want to spend the money on the pc but because my paint was so tough it cost me just as much and took longer. I have had one done at powder coatings in Birmingham before and it was around £35 it took a week and was a great job. You have to remember to factor in new bearings and some decals to the cost and time. It can get expensive especially if you have to post it and get a shop to do the bearings/assembly.

Raw frames look awful in photos but great in real life.

No, they don't, they always look totally wrong 😉
