I'm a Londoner and it winds me up how London-centric everyone in London thinks the world is - well it aint. I'm sure people from Manchester or Bristol or Glasgow or Timbuktu will want to sign up to that petition.
FWIW - I wont sign it.
doesn't the bikehub phone satnav thing do this?
So what would it do that the excellent free TFL ones won't?

Agreed. The TFL maps, website etc are superb at helping people get in to riding. Add to that the Boris Bikes, the blue lanes and the increas in bike specific crossings and signage, London is one of the best cities in the world for cycling.
So much so that I can hardly find a bike rack to lock up at outside the supermarket these days. That HAS to be a good thing!
So, in summary, there's no need for another map. We already have them.
I'd like to sign it, but it'll affect me how?
I am not sure a 'tube style' map is suitable for London bike routes. It's pretty difficult to get lost on the tube but trying to follow a London bike route on the other hand getting lost seems to be part of the experience. Surely effort into some good clear signage would be of more benefit.
Don't get me wrong, the map looks good. But will it help in the back streets of London?
Also, why does it need a petition to get a map into production - surely if you want to do it just do it.
If you read the background (complete with angry gibes against commenters) the wonderful map actually requires squares of paint every 10m on every road, signposts on every corner and no doubt considerable other installations just to make a map that looks a bit like the tube map work.
What a ****y piece of design.
no wonder they need a petition to get it through then ๐
Someone did a Tube style cycle map of Edinburgh and it is absolutely pants. That layout doesn't make sense for cycling.
London is one of the best cities in the world for cycling.
Hahahahahahahahahaha,
Have you ever been to anywhere else?
Come on chaps, navigating the city really isn't difficult.
If you get lost, where is the sun and what time of day is it? That gives your general direction. If it's cloudy, then look for aircraft. Generally speaking, the smaller ones fly north of the river and head east (going to City Airport) and the bigger ones head west and are generally south of the river. Once you know that, head in the general direction you need to go and then read the road signs.
If, someone is trying to steal your bike/ wallet/wife, then you are probably south of the river ๐
The Tube map is hugely distorted to make it easy to follow and look good, which is fine when you are travelling in a train underground and distances are pretty much irelevant. When cycling, an accurate scale must be one of the most important details to help plan a route.
The whole idea of a Tube style map for cycling anywhere seems pointless if you can't work out how far you'll have to pedal, or how to cut across between marked routes to the places you actually want to go to.
Have you ever been to anywhere else?
Yes, TJ. I don't just live in an Edinburgh bubble. ๐ I'm (rather too) well travelled, thanks.
