All Welcome!
Following on from a couple of threads aweeshoe and I are heading up into the pentlands for a social but socially awkward bike ride on Saturday. 🙂 The plan as it stands is to meet up at Harlaw at 10.30 am and take it from there. Pace is likely to be slow. There may be pushing uphills. There will be picnics. Route suggestions welcome. Everyone welcome.

Slow and socially awkward? Sounds just my sort of ride. Unfortunately I'm away next weekend so will miss out 🙁

I'd imagine being in Edinburgh would make you socially awkward as a given... 😋

No, Edinburgh is fine so long as you don't make eye contact or try to talk to anybody.

I will do the usual of saying I'll try and make it along but then forgetting/sleeping in/being too socially awkward.

Edinburgh isn't bad for social contact, then again most of the folk I knew there weren't actually from Edinburgh (eh) 😉

Wait a minute. TJ posted this today, April 1st - is this some sort of trick where people are going to turn out to be sociable?!

No trick! come on commit to it then you have to turn up!
should I give some really precise timings and places using 10 figure grid refs? Or would lat and long be better?

I'd be keen, especially since I haven't caught up with you since I moved back, but already have plans for Saturday morning. Will it become a semi regular thing do you think?

I'd be up (well, down) for that if I wasn't running at Glenlivet on Sunday.

Poah - Offroad but nice and easy as I am old and slow - but persistent 😉
Monrobiker - hopefully more than a one off. I need to get out more than I have done the last year or two

Quite fancy doing the 5 peaks at the pentlands. Have you got a route sorted out?

5 peaks? Too much for this spin I think ( and are we not asked to stay off the main summits?). I have routes with options in mind. I am thinking loops off harlaw . Got 3 loops in mind but we can make it up as we go along. Start at Harlaw to avoid either puke hill or dreghorn as the initial climb as I want it to be doable for everyone and to have options at any point. You can just do the climbs twice if you are that fit!

Never seen anything about staying off the peaks. Link strava or Trailforks for the trails you’re thinking about. Only know the 5 peaks

I seem to remember a sign with paths marked on it that asked us to be careful and / or to keep off the main peaks due to erosion issues but that was years ago. Its only a request from the rangers anyway. I have no strava or trailforks 🙂 Just come along and join us. I am thinking of the various passes / trails on the west side of the hills perhaps adding in some on the north side. Probably warm up with round Harlaw resovoir then Maidens, harbour hill, scalextrix, clubbidean, for one loop. Then see how much legs folk have left before picking other routes? Maybe beech hill, green cleuch, black hill for another loop? Open to suggestions but must be suitable for those of us who are approaching middle aged 😉
I will be riding out from leith probably so will want to do one of the descents off the north side to get towards home. Sherie knowe is a fave of mine but the end of it is a long way from Harlaw but I'd like to get it included. You can get back round to harlaw from there via clubbiedean and east kinleith

There is something like 100 miles of possible routes in the pentlands

smiles fondly for the days when puke hill and scaletrix were our stamping ground (and named also..) on a big day it might be Doanld's Hill and the rifle ranges. and beer.

I'd love to except I hate all human beings

(OK, that's not totally true, I'm just doublebooked with trailbuilding, but good idea! And on another day I would be up for it. Also I quite like my mum)

Sounds like a lot of fun but I'm away (anyway, a bit TOO social for this maybe...in a Harvey Weinstein kind of way...always first to help apply the chammy butter...)

How far you planning and when about? I'm back in Edinburgh for the day decorating my flat but could spare 2 or 3 hrs for a spin.

tp - Don't know really but in the pentlands you can bail out at any time. Depends really on how the climbing goes but I was thinking of doing a number of smallish loops rather than one big out and back

Gecko - nothing very difficult so the gravel bike would be OK but I think an MTB better.

10.30 at the ranger station at Harlaw. http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=318100&Y=665260&A=Y&Z=120

Would love to come along and put some faces to names but we’re down in England this weekend. If there’s another though, and with maybe a tad longer notice.

Anyone wanting my phone number in case of delays please PM me.
If we know you are going to be there we will wait honeybadger. I am riding out from leith and am struggling to remember how long it takes to get to Harlaw as its been a while

With regards to peaks, pretty much all the decent Pentlands routes don’t go near any of the actual peaks. And they almost all need pushing to get to the actual summits anyway.

Shit, this is happening 😳 I hope you all have your excuses ready; flat tyres, kid commitments and the kitchen spider just died are all acceptable. I'll be there, I'm looking forward to meeting you all 😊
