[#747223]

So, I have 3 bikes. The singlespeed and the 'Racebike' have Eggbeaters on, which I like a lot. My full-suss has some old Shimano DXes (i.e. that can be used as flats but also take SPDs). I've always ridden this bike with SPD-cleated shoes, but I've often loaned the bike to friends to ride treating the pedals as flats, and I'd like to still be able to do that.

But my SPD-cleated shoes are now dead.

I don't see why I should make a decision when STW could make it for me so do I:
a) fit crank brothers flat/eggie combination pedals (which ones, and are they any good?)
b) just buy another pair of shoes and fit SPD cleats to them
c) man up and learn to ride flats properly (in which case, what shoes for flats?)

Over to you!

If you like the Crank Brothers pedals then I would suggest getting a pair of their mallets.

Replace the crank bros with Shimano 520s - silly cheap (£20 or so if you look around) and work just as well as the expensive ones plus include cleats!

Bargin!

Rubbish, that's all the riding I do and all my bikes (except my road bike) have 520s. They all work perfectly.

My favourites are Time Atac pedals and my Diadora Geko shoes. I do take a euro size 48 which can make things a little difficult. The only problem is £15 for a set of cleats!!!!

if you don't need the spd function of the flats that much then get some decent flatties and a pair of 5.10s

i use eggbeaters on all my bikes (except the road bike) and will never go back to shimano spds. I'd rather run the risk of my pedals falling apart than suffer the unreliable clip in/out that I experience with Shimano. Personal opinion of course.

Typical STW! A string of posts arguing the merits of going back to cheap SPDs, and one recommending Times. Both of which would mean either a new pair of shoes or some genius way of removing well-used egg beater cleats from my one remaining pair of shoes.

Epic STW fail!

mrmichaelwright... first bad thing I have ever heard on 520's in my experience they are brilliant..

When my knee was ferked I road flats for 2 rides with a pair of slip on Vans, I dont reccomend the Vans!!

WillTheRealForumPleaseStandUp
Just get some egg beaters for the full suss, and a cheap pair of welgo flats and swap em about, takes the same time as changing shoes.

edit... did I pass?

I don't know why you asked the question. You don't want to change the egg thingies, you still want to let your mates ride flats, you don't want to spend any money and you're asking people who are bored at work and don't really care.

Don't do anything!!!!!

You've got a pair of trainers!!!!!

burgtech penthouses, cant comment on durability, and contary to SPD riders belief they dont "feel like your in SPD's" they jsut grip, plain and simple, not even a hint of movement!

My only complaint is I can no longer justify a pair of 5.10's as i cant see where any extra grip could exist!

Well you didn't say that early on which was a pretty key bit of information. Your FAIL I reckon 😉

Anyway, just drill the old cleats off. Easy. Then get the 520s 😉

Crank brothers mallets are fine for riding clipped in and for 'chickening out' and riding through sections un-clipped, but feel horrible in normal trainers / skate shoes imo. The eggbeater bit sits too proud to be comfortable and your foot slips off.

Seem to last a long time, I've had mine for 3 years or so and they get covered in Purbecks sand and grit pretty regularly.

Who said anything about not spending any money? I WANT to buy a pair of pedals OR shoes but I don't want to buy both.

...and I don't have a pair of trainers.
