+1. Relatively expensive but they last well and are grippy, so far fewer accidents than plastic slippy rubbish. 

Forward Affix Jnr. About £20 from Source BMX.  Nice small platform and the pins aren’t too scary.
although I just bought our kids some small Nukeproof Urchins for £29 and they look  great in the flesh.

They're a whooping 7mm bigger in one dimension and 12mm bigger in the other than the slaters

Plastic pedals are plenty grippy enough as the grip comes from the pins

Vp push compact if you can find them.
I think they had a name change, but nylon with in-molded metal pins that are the perfect amount of grip as far as I could tell.
Sdg Slater's are great if you swap the pins for something narrower. They're too big and flat to be effective even with 5:10s

Also add the issi thump small with metal pins to your search list.

Look at BMX race pedals. Great, cheap, durable.

I got some V6s for one of our kids’ 16 inch bikes after recommendations on here. They were huge and if he went around a corner he’d clip them on the ground. After a few days he’d lost several of the pins and they were basically scrap. The Forward Affix Junior pedals are £19.99and the pins are more robust without being daggers, we’ve had no pedal/shin interactions.

I would avoid the V6s as they just sucked as adult pedals AND kids pedals.
plastic pedals are fine but you want replaceable pins on them.

Have a look at EarlyRider pedals. We have used their P1 resins (plastic pins, work well on waffle shoes like vans) and their Works metal pedals (non-sharp pins). Both have a small platform, so good for little feet. Both are £22.50 and £25 respectively.

My daughter is now on the small Crankbrother Stamps (resin ones), can find them for under £30 if you look around.
