Took my bike for it's first proper ride this morning and found, of course, that the stock pedals kept slipping. I understand this could also possibly be down to shoe selection, but I'm new to MTBing so have not got all the kit just yet. Can anyone suggest some decent pedals and/or shoes for me, looking to spend a max of £50 on each if possible, thanks!

stock pedals are usually crap. Superstar Nanos seem to have good reviews- got a pair on my girlfriends bike, and their ok (from my limited riding on them) but nowhere near as good as Straitline pedals, but then, they are way out of your budget.
Depends how much out of my budget, if they are the dogs bollocks in terms of pedals, perhaps it's worth saving for.
nearly twice your budget. Some people would say your crazy spending more than £50 on pedals because you can get decent ones for that and the SS Nanos are very good. (amongst others)
oh and some decent shoes would make a huge differenec too. dosent have to be very expensive. I use Vans skater shoes at the moment and if anything I have more grip than I want sometimes (sometimes you want to re-adjust your foot position on the pedal quickly but sometimes you just cant move ur foot quick enough). Bascially you want a shoe which has a tread that will allow good contact with the pins
Before you start buying stuff - have you tried different shoes? I find its not always the grippiest looking soles that grip the pedal well as the pins on the pedal can end up in the gaps between the nobbles on the soles.
I currently use my old gym shoes and the only other shoes I have are 2 pairs of Timberland boots, 1 of them being steel capped for work so I'm not really sure if my gym shoes are doing the job.
Skate shoes and flat pedals are your friend in this case I use wellgo B-54s and etnies cinch shoes, more grip than I need so far...
Check out the Classifieds for pedals.
This combo comes in at less than £100 (with 10% off basket at merlin) and you could do a lot worse. 5.10's are better for out and out grip but are more expensive and the shimanos are easier to get dry after a soaking.

These start at £32 and have sealed bearings. Wide pedal but the pins are pretty lethal! I have these on my singlespeed:

bite the bullet and go clipless , there is no substitute.
Same as superstar Nano's only cheaper: http://www.carboncycles.cc/?s=0&t=2&c=84&p=940&
Clipless, Time Atac Aliums are good value. And some suitable shoes, of course. No chance of slipping/bashed shins.
Plus we get the entertainment value of how many times you will fall off on your first ride 🙂

True, if you are serious then get proper pedals not kids pedals.
Shimano xT cost £60

Decent Shoes £60

Job done. p.s. im not suggesting you buy from CRC you may get then cheaper elsewhere.
I didn't actually fall off on my first ride, just slipped a few times on the pedals lol. Those black flat sole Shimano shoes look quite good, but would anything with a similar sole suffice?
Wellgo MG-1. Very grippy, wide platform and very light. Love mine.

TBH, pretty much any aftermarket pedal will be a massive improvement on the stock beartraps that came with your bike. Those things seem to be designed to eject your foot at a moment's notice, gods help you if your soles are slightly wet.
Personally, I swear by DMRs. The V8's revolutionised my riding. The V12 is zero-maintenance (sealed bearing) but considerably more expensive, and the Vault got excellent reviews in this month's ST mag. Or, Wellgo do a 'copy' of the V8s which are cheaper still.
Mind your calves / shins if you come off, though; spiky spikes are spiky.
