Hey all,

Recently obtained some cranks and pedals. Cranks are Raceface Atlas in a lovely shade of orange, and the pedals are Hope F20's - Nice little setup, but.......the pedals are stuck fast!!

Allen key option only to remove and they aren't budging at all, tried good old GT85, and WD40, even gave them an overnight bath in CocaCola, all to no avail.

Anyone any ideas for removing with causing any damage to the annodising etc??

Thanks in advance

Are they 8mm hex key?
Use a bigger lever and they will come off. Old seatpost or handlebars are usually my levers of choice.

turn the allen key in the correct direction?

after that, crank arm in a vice and a longer lever on the allen key (the ones that go in a half inch square drive ratchet/bar are good)

Ordinary WD40 and GT85 are not penetrating oil.

The proper stuff works quite well. WD40 fast Release or Plus Gas.

Left hand pedal is reverse threaded, but you knew that.

Remember: a shock load is much better at releasing a stick thread than sustained pressure.

If it were me it'd involve a good quality long 8mm Allen key/ratchet with a bit, a bit of old carpet, putting the crank on the floor, foot on the pedal to stabilise, and a few sharp blows to the Allen key with the hammer.

You also need to not confuse yourself when undoing it from the back rather than the front.

Crank in the vice, wrapped in a rag. Nice quality 8mm bit in a ratchet or breaker bar. Brace yourself for when it does let go (remove all sharp objects from the surrounding area.)

Freeze spray may be worth a go too. Shocking helps - fond memories of a Yugoslavian showing me how to remove stuck wheelnuts by hitting the end of a wheel spanner whilst applying torque.

You are definitely turning it the right way yeah? I had a pedal stuck fast once, even snapped a spanner trying to get it off.

Was turning it the wrong way.

Thanks

Definitely turning right way ๐Ÿ™‚ I've had stuck bits before, but nothing like this really is tough, may have to invest in a new leverage bar

I just released a stuck one by long pedal spanner and a vice

Removed the chainrings - less to accidentally spike myself on.
Then positioned crank arm and spanner handle in the vice and used the vice to squeeze the crank arm and spanner together (as if trying to turn the spanner).

This previously hadn't budged with standing on the pedal spanner whilst in the bike, using a dewalt impact driver etc
