3rd time in a year, it really hurts. 3 things to look at:

1) Crap technique, what should i be doing differently? Heel's down?

2) Using DMR Vault's, maybe difffernet pedals?

3) Please recommend some knee pads with shin protection, I am currently using Dainese Trail Skin's

4) Clipless pedals? 😉

Seriously though, I only use flats a couple of times a year, just to keep my eye in as it were, but I haven't scraped my shins in years.
Learnt the hard way on bmx as a yoot (plenty of scars to prove it) - heals down, and grippy shoes.

Football shin pads down the socks are my current solution.

You're using proper mtb shoes, right? Those things grip the pedals like nothing else, hard enough to reposition a foot when riding let alone slip a pedal.

yeah, but you regret it somewhat when it causes varicose veins on your shins (as it has in my case 🙁 )

I have some impressive varicose veins on my calf I must confess but shins ok so far paradoxically.

The legend that is Jedi sorted me out, it turns out that it was my weight distribution, too far back so my forward foot was spinning off the pedal.

Really need to use something to protect the shin, as the bone is really close to the surface, and it can become infected.
When you think of pedals, its going to be really dirty, plus you might have picked up poo or god knows what.
Dirt in a wound is bad, but soil can be considerably worse as I think there's some bacteria in it that can lead to disastrous complications.
