[Closed] Pedal (M540's) replacement - XT M785's worth a punt?

[#3541024]

My trusty 540's have just dropped a bearing after 4 years of constant use.

The 785 XT's are getting good press. Are these worth it over the 540's?

Cheers

I replaced the M540s on my Trance X with some M530 (cheaper version of M785). I wanted to try the platforms first, thus the cheaper version. The Jury's out so far, more stability with the platforms, but harder to clip in or out of. To be fair I haven't ridden the Trance much since then, so haven't fully mastered that part fully yet.

Hmmm... it's the clipping in, if anything I would criticise the 540's for

I use multi-directional cleats so cliiping out easier

Does that small cage give enough support I'm tempted to get some m 647's as my next purchase unless someone can tell me the xt trail ones are better.

i love mine... i've got the m530s i've owned the full platform shimano spds and the normal style ones previously. They give a very similar level of support to the full platform m647 with a flat sole style spd shoe but give better ground clearence.

They also double up as a bottle opener but i can only see that as being most appropriate when you're a student keeping your bike in your room like myself.

One good vote for them then

I had the big platformed spd's and liked them - but they certainly weren't lightweights lol

I switched from M520s to the M785s in October & there's no way I'd go back. Better support for your foot, easier to find the cleat in a rush and if you don't find it in time (like if you have to dab on a technical descent), there's enough platform to get a descent grip. I do use FiveTen spd shoes though, so the rubber sole probably helps with this. Not used the other shimano platform spds to comment.
