Fancy messing about with your camera, in the woods, with grown men, in lycra* then please put your hand up.
Route & timings TBA, nbt, of this parish will be planning that bit as there's more legit riding on that side of the hill.
*Purely for fun, no 'specialist website' images planned so one would hope there would be banter, sharing of tips (and of the resulting photo's) etc.
There'll certainly be a lot of 'oh. lovely, but, could you just ride that again?" and 'put yer pro elbows out a bit more' sort of stuff.

I'm in, pending not being either in bed with the missus or Thailand (or in bed with the missus, in Thailand).

Need to go buy an SLR though as Dad's making noises about someone having borrowed his last year and not brought it back yet.........

Where is this pootle taking place?

it'll be somewhere around Marple / New Mills / Hayfield. I need to have a think about what locations might work well for photos and numbers

Onzadog and me will come along for a bit of modullin! We've managed to find some more colourful cycling attire to wear too (well, tops at least). I'll be in lovely red and OD will be in green.

Is this still on for next weekend?

Oh my goodness, how time flies when you're having fun - like we did today, a rather nice and quite dry ride round the local trails followed by a pint of mild in the pub while the brass band played a Bond medley. Eeee, we know 'ow to live round these parts.

Time flies even faster when you're manically busy at work - I completely forgot that I hadn't updated this thread, and had not realised it was so close. Anyway, today I've finalised the plans with the aid of the Junior Deputy Apprentice RouteMeister MartynS.

We'll be starting from the Sett Valley Trail car park in Hayfield. Meet around 9.30 for a 10am PROMPT departure.

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=403575&Y=386931&A=Y&Z=120&ax=403575&ay=386931

It's a pay and display car park, so bring change for the machines. There are toilets there, and it's close enough to the village for us to grab a pint or something afterwards.

I've planned a route with many many options for early finishes or extensions, depending on how time goes.

If you're coming along to model, it looks really good if you can wear bright, primary colours - e.g. a solid blue jacket, or a nice bright yellow top. Don't worry if you haven't got anything like that, you're still likely to come out of the day with a good pic or two. You might be asked to push up and ride down the same piece of trail a dozen times or more, so bring plenty of food and drink!

If you're coming to take photos, then you'll probably get better results with an SLR or a camera with a degree of manual control. If you are not familiar with your camera, it might be worth while spending a while learning what the main controls do - I'll be honest though, I've still not got to grips with things like second curtain shutter sync and Flash exposure compensation

I'll be shooting Canon as will Tollah (if he's able to make it). Marsdenman bats for the other side, he's a Nikon shooter. He makes money from it so he must be able to get some good photos from it, imaging what he'd be able to do with proper gear ! 🙂

Any other questions, post then up here

Sounds great! We're also bringing our mate Rob with us, who does a bit of professional photographering on the side.

I'll be shooting Canon as will Tollah (if he's able to make it).

Of Course
Tollah, you still going? I could pick you up on the way..

Thanks Graham but will be travelling up with Mandi as its the only way we seem to be able to spend time together recently 🙂

On saying all that I'll be there if the weather holds out, can't be bothered to drive for 2.5 hrs to get soaked and not get the camera out!

+ 1 for me but I will be driving closer to 5 (from Cardiff).
Will there be some good riding too - like a reasonable distance?
Never ridden the peaks but always wanted to. I'm happy to come down Friday - have a decent ride Sat with somebody and the photo thing Sun?
I'm Australian, dont know anybody, or the trails but I'm going home in 2 weeks!

I'll post up a link tomorrow with the route I have in mind. If you can read maps, the route is:

Hayfield - Twentytrees - Middlemoor - Little Hayfield (optional cut out)- Blackshaw Head - Lantern Pike - Rowarth - Matley Moor - Lantern Pike (again, figure of 8) - Sett Valley Trail (optional cut out) - New Allotments (optional cut out) - Far Phoside (optional cut out) - Ashes Bank - PUB.

In honesty, if we get to New Allotments I'll be amazed. There's some great riding around and if you can spend the weekend up here then go for it - I can plan a route or two or you but if you post up on the main forum you'll quite possibly get an offer of guiding

I'll come along if the weather holds out. I can't imagine it's much fun trying to hide pricy cameras under coats.

Fair point, and to be fair if it's lashing down then we can go for a non-camera style ride - but it may not be worth travelling half way across the country for that

<puts hand up>
Yes, I will be there (barring famine, flood and anything else that crops up this week...)
oh, agree, if the weather is poor, camera stays home.... i've just had a £450 invoice for this years annual service and repairs on the D700 & 24-70..... 😯

Back on track - many, many thanks to nbt and MartynS for routerring 🙂

Marsdenman bats for the other side, he's a Nikon shooter. He makes money from it so he must be able to get some good photos from it, imaging what he'd be able to do with proper gear !

Marsden man would like it to be known that he largely makes his money photographing folk who are standing still. People and things wot are moving are a different ball game all together ergo, any decent shots from Sunday will be 100% fluke - a combination of his charm, wit and rad (long forgotten) skillz he picked up on the Seb Rogers course back in the day.
He would also like it known that Nikon is, of course, the only camera system in the world worth using 😉 Seems about 10, from the 1000's of 'togs at the Olympics, agree 🙂

If you are not familiar with your camera <cough> what goes on between Nikki the Nikon and I is our business only!

I'll be honest though, I've still not got to grips with things like second curtain shutter sync and Flash exposure compensation

Now, it is kind of logical to think that, as I make money using my camera, I know everything there is to know about all techniques. This, of course, is not true 🙂
More than happy to do my best to help with advice on stuff I do know, though - just ask 🙂

I fancy popping along but Caz has got dibs on the car for Sunday morning so if any of you kind folk are going past Sale Moor and have space in the car for me and the bike, a lift would be great (more than happy to repay in lift to mid week rides or in end of ride beer)

Dont think i'm up for riding over to Hayfield that early 😀

I was disappointed to note that Cannon out numbered Nikon about 10:1 at all the events I went to. I have to also confess to photographing all the camera men so I could zoom in on their kit to get model #s and also running a live Getty and PA feed on my iPhone so I could would out who they were from their shots, the good ones (Getty Images) were always on their own away from the pack who stood in the obvious place.

A thought - my first /top tip' ahead of Sunday - based on just about the most popular question I'm asked..

Ever think your photo's look brighter, or darker, when on your computer, compared to what you saw on your camera? It happens, a lot, and this little routine is the 1st step in consistency in your editing...

'Calibrate' your camera viewing screen to your computer screen - often overlooked and, pretty simple to do.
As your computer screen is the done you'll use all the time for viewing and editing, use that as the baseline so.

Check camera instruction book for how to adjust the brightness of the viewing screen.

Turn compter on and let it warm up.

Whilst computer warms up, pop a memory card in your camera, set camera to JPEG. Take a shot of an average scene - pointing it at the houses opposite, with a bit of sky in will do the trick - we're not after 'art' 😉

Upload image to computer screen, display full screen.
Put memory card back in camera, display the picture and then adjust brightness of camera screen to look as close as possible to that of your computer screen.

et-Voila - what you see in camera will look about the same on the computer 🙂

If you are really keen and have the time, it's an easy flat cycle along the Sett Valley Trail from New Mills to Hayfield

re: 2nd curtain flash, don't use it, may try it on Sunday. Can explain it.
(and, as ever, good old Google will pull up a gaggle of examples and explanations!)

Flash compensation - use that quite a bit - happy to explain 🙂

You've ridden quite a lot the trails already.
'Far Phoside' is the steep track (we rode it in that cold summer last year) where you filmed the descent, quite a few fallers if I remember, due to slippery, slidey, muddy, rainy fun, so SS will be fine.
Push though to get up 'New Allotments'.

If we get to New Allotments and Far Phoside I'll be amazed. Twentytrees will be a bitch on SS, and the climb to blackshaw head is a bastard road climb, but other than that it's all just nice riding. Honest.

It's drying out up there. I know because the run off goes into a well and springs around my garden. New Allotments is a challenge to complete with the erosion at the top of the climb.

Hmmm... quite doable bar the loose bit after the first gate at the very bottom. Especially for a nichetastic singlespeed pro like Mr 'Lah...

Anyway... I may pobble along on Sunday. I'm far from pretty, but my bike is quite attractive. Will there be photocake? 🙂

Really tempted by this, especially as I've just bought a new (well secondhand really) SLR body!!

Unfortunately I'm having problems with the rear wheel of the new bike slicing through tubes!! The furthest I've managed is 20 miles before a tube went! Waiting for a response from On-One!!

So sorry but no Brownies this time!! 🙁

We've just had this, or more specifically with valves ripping out of tubes. Turns out some numpty (naming no names 😳 ) had not fitted rim tape correctly so the valve hole was uncovered. New rim tape has solved that...

Well it appears that my wheels have been supplied with tubes (as you might recall) but without rim tape!! I'm currently in discussion with the supplier!

I've got some spare rim tapes in the box if you want to come along, only takes a few minutes to fit rim tapes. Problem's going to be remembering to pack them and the trackpump...

Nice day out. We took longer than I expected on Middle Moor, so skipped right from there to the watersplash, where Tollah took a tumble. We grabbed a few more snaps while he was escorted back to the car, then we all retired to a local hostelry to prop up the local economy

Things I learnded today:

I am not very fit at the moment. Not very fit at all
I am not great at getting the exposure right
I can't fix the crap exposure in "post" as the software I have installed won't open my CR2 files.

Still, we had an enjoyable day out, people picked up different tips and everyone seemed to enjoy the riding we got in before the rain hit us as we made our way home. Next one will be Darn Sarf in France or the Forest of Den or something
