Applying for a new passport soon as mine expired 20 years ago! and im currently sporting a big bushy beard and have grown my hair out a bit
Now if i get the photo taken whilst sporting the above and then come summer time i decide to shave it all off will i have any trouble with passport control?

There are instructions on the website with examples. I think you’re good to have facial hair.

I now have a beard and can't use the automatic passport control. Means I end up in a different queue to the rest of the family.

You'd better go 50:50 to make sure you are recognisable in all conditions. Shave half your beard and get half your hair cut. Leave the other side untamed. Obvs make sure its the same side of each.
