Passing a bike on a dual carriageway:-(

I tell you what the carists can have the 70mph dual tracks if the rural b roads are all made 40mph if two lanes and 30mph if single-track. Deal?

Honestly, that's about the safe speed for a lot of roads, they downgraded to A78 between Largs and Skelmorlie recently to a 40mph limit to try and deal with the amount of clowns coming off of it. I'd be happy with that unless the road was made to a certain standard involving decent sight lines and somewhere for cyclists (and therefore become an A road).

Which leads to:

Cyclists should be able to ride safely on any road. It’s up to car drivers to drive sensibly.

'Should' doing a lot of heavy lifting there. I agree totally with the sentiment but the reality is somewhat different.

So since I answered a question does anyone fancy giving a stab at mine?

Before cars people didn't travel as much and there were more local fa ilities.

@squirelking.

You are confused. Just because cars are driving like dicks does not mean that's the way it should always be.

Time to change the balance and make walking and cycling safe activities.

Imagine if, when planning new big roads, it was mandatory to include a seperate cycle lane alongside it (such as on some ring roads).
Seems like if you're building something big, it's a small inclusion that future-proofs a more active population, and the viability of e-bikes as transport.

Nope, I think it's you who is confused as that's exactly what I said.

Now how do you propose we change this?

Madness, it'll never catch on, people have a RIGHT to ride on that road I'll have you know.

It is for pretty much everyone using them today in our current society, unless people still take their turnips to market 😁

Yes but your arguement was that they made the transport links for the cars. That's shite and you know it.

This would be good. Last big development round here the sustainable transport tick box (despite severing a sustainable transport artery for the car route ) was to simply say - we have removed X amount of cars from the alternate roads making them safe* for cyclists.

*Reality was they made a race track for the limited cars that used them.

My favourite road name for a cyclist trying to improve infrastructure, Labour in Vain Drove (Lincs)

And for some drivers, the A491 dual carriageway, Bell End (Worcs)

As i stated earlier, this was in the context of the roads we're discussing in this thread, you show me a modern dual carriageway or A road that wasn't designed with motor vehicles in mind, i.e the material, drainage, width, layout, bridge strengths, etc, etc.
Honestly, you're arguing that the road network we have that are 60 or 70mph limits weren't designed for motor vehicles, or that we haven't moved forward since horse and cart! I used to cycle and use the likes of General Wade's roads, but i wouldn't want to drive down them at 60!
