Hi
Just been reading the old thread about colostomy bags and mountain biking. I’ve had a colostomy bag for 7 years and already had one op to repair a parastomal hernia several years prior to starting riding a mountain bike 18 months or so ago. In the last year I’ve done about 2500 miles off road in the main and I don’t really restrict what or how I ride due to the colostomy. In the time Ive been riding, I’ve developed another parastomal hernia. Ive got an appointment with my surgeon on Christmas Eve to discuss an op to repair for the second time as it had become a bit uncomfortable at times but I’ve been managing it with elastic strapping. I’m starting to think its a better idea to keep riding with support and only have the op if i’m Forced to as I can’t really contemplate not riding for the recovery period. Surgeon would rather I rode and kept fit, even if it doesn’t help the hernia. Anyone else got experience of this?
I had to take a break from riding to get a hernia at my stoma site sorted. Twas a pain losing fitness and having to be careful not to pile the weight on but I consoled myself by planning a few upgrades. I even managed to be sensible about the amount and type of riding I did when I re-started which was very unlike me. Continuing with the hernia wasn't a good option in my case. Overall, it didn't really take too long and was manageable.
Thanks for your reply Lycanthropefailed, good name btw! I’ve also ordered a new bike which will arrive early Jan and I think I’ll have to have at least 2 months riding that to then be satisfied by just looking at it for 2-3 months while I recover. Has your op kept the hernia at bay for a long time since you had it done?
Has my Stoma 5 years and never really had issue of Hernia
But recently I’ve had what feels like movement down in lower abdomen but not anywhere near stoma
Had a few folk on forums for Chronies saying it sounds like hernia
Is this how yours feels Slilverfoxx??
I have almost eradicated my osteoporosis with the cycling which I’m happy about
But always para about hernia’s
I always wear a Lycra belt though so hope this has kept it at bay
Yeah, feels sort of heavy, before I started riding, it wasn’t that noticeable but now I’ve lost weight and the other side is slimmer it looks like a large woman’s breast on the stoma side, I use a Spanx type vest with an elastic strap then pull my belt tight to hold it in while I ride. I did get a proper ostomy support from the hospital where your bag fits through a hole but that feels like it could cause damage if you were to crash and it pulled the stoma around.
I’ve had one of those had a small plastic guard that went over my Stoma under a flap on the belt
My stoma nurse said it would likely cause and not stop a hernia
My feeling is kinda like a wriggle or something when I get it,not sore
Hernia op. was about 5 or 6 years ago. Many a crash since then without disturbing it.
Thanks, I think I’m going to keep going until it has to be done.
