...the British kind, not the American word for trousers. Do liner shorts make them redundant? Do lycra short wearers go commando? If not, then isn't cotton bad in our damp climate? Puzzled...

always commando when you;re in your lycra. its not the sweating its the bunching up.

enjoy your freedom. then go a step further and dig two fingers into some chamois cream. you might never go back to pants again!

Interesting... This explains the fear of lycra on here, one would be rather exposed. I have been lycra-ing with synthetic techy fabric (very) briefs underneath. Been fine so far, even when soaked through. Longest stint has been eight hours but that was in the dry, done about three hours in the wet.

Exactly - uncovered lycra! Lycra/liners under baggies seems to be the norm.

If I'm not getting chafing/bunching/annoyance from not going commando, is there any reason to switch from briefs+lycra to lycra+baggies, apart from the stylistic issue (and its social implications)? Trying to justify spending £40 on a decent pair of baggies when what I already have appears to work (though they said that about the horse and cart before the car was invented)...

Lycra (or any other padded cycling shorts) simply aren't designed to be worn over your undies.

lycra on the skin.
baggie shorts on top visible to the rest of the world.

that being said, when wearing the ( as my wife calls em ) fanny pad shorts, I do find that I my bits tuck down into a less comfy position than when wearing pants to cup me bits, and so i have to rearrange me bits with a little pull forward into a comfy position again. 🙂

but ultimately, padded lycra shorts is the way forward in the long run.

chiefgrooveguru - check out classified I've picked up a couple of pairs of as new baggies in past month for usually more than half price.

Maybe worth trying a second hand pair and if you don't like them sell them on again

Lycra shorts best for cycling. Simple.
But, baggies look better when you pop into the pub mid-ride.
Also, I wear baggies over lycra for abrasion resistance, especially in winter when I've got relatively expensive tights on.

Oh, and yes, commando under lycra shorts

The only thing between my lycra and me is sometimes some minty arse lard. Having said that, if you're wearing pants underneath, and they're not giving you grief, then carry on, if that's what makes you comfy. I tend not to do cafe stops, so don't care what others may or may not think

I've given up on baggies though. Wet; they're just heavy, they get in the way, they're all pretty pretty much a fashion free zone (I'm thinking "ain't half hot, Mum...) , and they're all extortionately priced.

Or possibly a pioneer? No rearrangement required with suitable pants, and wicking fabric ensures one stays more dry than commando stylee. Anyway, this NOOB was riding mountain bikes before we had all this suspension and gear indexing to make life easy, he just didn't mess around with poncey clothes back then. Some discounted baggies inc. lycra liner have just been ordered for comparative purposes.
