Bump.
I'm going to be after a rack for a commuting/shopping bike.
Well, I'll want some panniers to go on it, too.

Anyone got any recommendations on what's decent or what's not, please?

Blackburn were certainly the go-to brand for racks once. Tortec do some nice ones too. The mrs. uses a Tortec rack and Altura panniers. Good value and functional.

+1 for Tortec they are very well made and there are usually some good deals around.

They also do some disc compatible ones if needed.

I have a couple of these Tortec's for general duties and they've been spot on:

One of these: TorTec Expedition Alloy Rear Rack

Plus these: Ortlieb Back Roller Classic Panniers (or Edinburgh Coop's cheaper equivalent)

Should see you going for many a good year

Steel - Tubus
Nonsteel - Topeak MTX

I rather like the MTX rack top bags that slide on the top track (can also take a child seat). Neither are light, both can be used to secure a light.

Blackburn used to be the go to, but they need brackets for lights. Have those as well with a child seat.

Tortec Expedition and back roller classics. The expedition has a separate pannier rail so you can still easily strap stuff to the top when the pannier is on.

If you're in no rush, just wait for Aldi to do their next cycling gear offer.
Their panniers are just £9.99 and really tough, I've two.

Crikey Damitamit, that's a back light and a half. Does it bolt on? What sort is it?

Thanks folks, that's given me plenty of sifting to do.
I'm getting the bike from Evans' (Ride2Work scheme), so I'll be taking advantage of the £100 worth of accessories they're willing to throw in.
So, it'll be a rack, a bolt-on rear light and probably a rack top bag (I've been reminded, there's some 30+ year old Karrimor front panniers, that I got in my teens, at my mum's house, that'll maybe do for this year).
Thanks again.
Chip

I have a tubus fly that is light and strong and great quality.

It maybe a bit more than you want to pay but it should last ages.

I've just bought a topeak super tourist and it looks good so far, the lower bars like the tortec pic above are really useful, but either make sure your panniers are a tight fit (mine aren't), or you tape up the tubes to prevent rubbing off the paint.

Having said all that but I have an old (and a little battered) blackburn mtb rack for 26inch wheels if you want it? I'll post it to you for £12.

That's a Philips Saferide dynamo jobbie. Big reflector in the middle with a "lumiring" around it.

The tortec has a plate to bolt on rack specific lights. I know Smart sell a rack mount separately for their lights.

It's a 700c (Arkose) I'm getting, cheers Tom.

Thanks Damit, it looks like I'll have to see what lights they've got in.
