So I've some carbon bars on my son's frame that are not very co-ordinated. If I wanted to paint them jet black I presume it's as simple as:

1) rub down with fine sandpaper
2) spray carefully with some car spray paint from Halfords like http://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-body-repair/car-spray-paints/halfords-matt-black-spray-300ml.

Right?

Why not just rub the paint-off with fine wet/dry and leave them natural carbon? Painting them will just make them look, err rubbish if not done well.

Naked Carbon fibre and water don't mix that well, I'd want some kind of lacquer /clear coat on them.
I'm sure it's not a massive issue unless for prolonged periods but personally I'd either spray them matt black with a suitable paint or sand the coating off and recoat them with a clear coat to insure they are reasonably sealed from moisture.

Personally I think I'd sand them very gently so the new paint can take, and then just spray them matt black.

With a spray can, little and often is the key, leaving a good 20 mins drying time between coats, which should literally be a dusting, lest you end up with a lumpy finish and paint runs.
