I've been looking for something like this but packable and waterproof don't really go well together. Anything properly waterproof doesn't pack down that small & for me the smaller the better as I need it to fit in a jersey pocket

Tad over budget, but as small as it gets...

I have several of these, you can find them on ebay too.
I even cut the arms of one to make a lightweight gilet.
You can get them with hoods too if you need it.
They pack really small, could fit inside a tennis ball.
100% waterproof, but as you would expect, not that breathable if you're putting a lot of effort in, but perfect for just keeping in you pocket just in case.

Altura Pocket Rocket? Got one for eldest lad at Christmas and seems OK.

Waterproof? Packable? £50?

However, for a very breathable windproof that'll keep a shower off, I'd go Pertex or similar (again - I've owned several in the past). You should be able to find something like this online for near £50: http://road.cc/content/review/38270-montane-featherlite-velo-h2o-jacket

i picked up a barely worn Gore Path off the classifieds here for £50.

it's very packable and very waterproof and surprisingly breathable.

I like the Castelli Squadra Long jacket. Suitable for road and mtb. At the better end of water resistant. £40 although it does appear for about £28-30. Not very breathable, but it wouldn't be at that price

Dyfi Active Shell from Howies ?

Probably wouldn't set out in a downpour wearing it, but works pretty well, packs up small fist size.

£39 just before Christmas.

Also look at the Endura pacajak - more of a roadie fit but its very small, packs light, for emergency use. sub £35. Used it a few times as well for wind protection, pretty good IMO.

^^^ I have both the Howies and the pacajak. I use the former on mtb, latter on road. The Endura one goes much smaller and flaps a lot less, otherwise performance very similar - great wind protection and good in a heavy shower

I find the Dyfi more sweaty that my Montane, especially after a clean a re-proof (it stopped being showerprood). It's still not bad though compared to the Gore-Tex-a-like winter coat.

Check the sizing on the Dyfi if you're after one - they tend to come up a little small.
