Hello there,

I might be mad, but does anyone have any experience with marrying a Pace RC200 f8 with a Rohloff 500/14 Speedhub (disc compatible) - QR axle?

I got hold of a Rohloff last year, and it's been sitting around doing nothing. I'm thinking of selling it, but i'm wondering if it's worth building it into my Pace. I'm currently set up with XTR, but always have trouble tuning it perfectly before a ride, or once it gets muddy.

Will the extra weight kill the ride quality...?

Any ideas / opinions would be gratefully received

I always wanted one of those frames.

Not sure I'd want to put a rohloff on it though

Has the F8 got disc caliper mounts ?
Should be easy enough if it has.
I'd do it.

Does have disc mounts yes...

I thought in general it was good to have a horizontal drop out for a Rohloff, like a thorn...?

Thanks

That would make it easier, it just means you'll need a tensioner.

I'd be more concerned about getting your XTR groupset setup properly.

Rohloffs are awesome. There are obvious differences in how they ride compared to derailleurs, but that is it. Not worse, just different. you get used to it very quickly, and then the benefits quickly become apparent.

They work better with EBB type frames than horizontal dropout frames due to the torque they generate on the axle plate. Worth remembering. A QR on a horizontal frame sometimes is not enough to keep it in place.

Cheers everyone...

Does anyone have an opinion as to whether it will put unnecessary stress on the frame, bearing in mind it's about 11 years old now...?

Also, the lovely thing about the rc200f8 is the balance, with a light fork up front it's amazingly good up rough terrain. Like a spaniel through a thicket... Would the Rohloff change this...?

Thanks again

Wilf

In 1st gear a Rohloff puts 98% of the drive torque through the axle plate in the opposite direction.
On a disc braked bike with a speedbone, that means there's a lot of force going through the caliper mount.
Braking forces are far higher than pedalling forces, you can stop far quicker than you can accelerate, although braking puts the mount under compression, the Rohloff will put it under tension.

In short, it should be OK.
I've seen a custom built steel frame break at the seat stay and chain stay because of the torque reaction of a Rohloff.
On the other hand, I've used one on a Santa Cruz Chameleon and Blur, Kona Big Unit and Gary Fisher Rig, all aluminium frames not intended for Rohloff.
I'm fairly heavy on the kit and I've had no problems with them.
I'll be fitting one to my Specialized Rockhopper soon too.
