I quite fancy a fork upgrade for my XC bike, 100mm travelish. Tempted by a used pace fork as it's

a) Light
b) British (or was!)

But...I hear loads of horror stories of really poor build quality etc. For about £100-£150 for an RC39/40/41, is it worth the risk? Will my inner weight junky love it or will its unreliability make me cry?

Had RC36's on my old bike for over 12 years and they were well used and worked perfectly with a little regular (yearly) maintenance which was a doddle. From what I remember some of the more complicated ones produced before the demise of Pace forks were more troublesome. I'd still have them if my old bike hadn't been nicked a year ago.

Had a set of Pro Class 2s and won't go near Pace again.
Very unreliable and Pace were very unhelpful.
.
Got Maguras now. Very good, and lovely people to deal with. So I now have 2 pairs.

Had a set of rc40s from 2005 for 5 years, little bit of stiction initially but still worked perfectly after 5 years, two services and little maintenance when I sold them.
Awesome forks.

Unreliability never affected me, I've had Pace then DT Swiss on my bikes from 1995 to present.

Only just removed my RC40's from the P7 after about 7 years, to be replaced by a set of Pikes.
Only changed them to get a stiffer bolt-through front. Dead easy to service, launch control lock-down system is brilliant.

I had a set of RC40's bought direct from Pace. They seized up after two rides. Pace said it was most likely down to lack of servicing and it wouldn't be warranty, they were 2 weeks old. I vowed never to buy anything from them again. They were a good fork for the first hour of ownership though!

Mate had some RC40's with launch control (I think thats what it was called) a feature stopped working each ride.

I think at one point they never got out of the house before failing.

Finally exchanged for his money back. Are they not part of DT now?

Was once a massive fan and spent thousands on there kit. Had a steerer tube snap on me, this was due to extremely poor manufacture. Resulting pile up of me and bike was not nice, still carry the scars and have treatment for one of the injuries. Pace were terrible and could not have been more unhelpful. This was 2001 so things may have changed. Having used there products for many years I never spent another thing with them and never will.

Any fork of this age is going to have problems now, regardless of brand.

Take the time to get one that's well serviced or just buy something newer.

Are they not part of DT now?

No, DT Swiss bought the rights to the forks, Pace still family run up in dalby. Just doing frames and rigids now.
