Raheem Sterling going to Man City for 49 million quid got me thinking generally about overpriced stuff - what kit have people bought over the years that was ridiculously overpriced?
Changing my cranks to XTR would probably count - nearly 300 quid and the Deore ones I had were working fine, the graphics on the XTR cranks wore off in about 3 seconds and they looked more shabby than the cranks I replaced...
Chain guides.
Let that be a lesson to you!
Any clothing, with the possible exception of Aldi, that is labelled 'cycling specific', definitely falls into the overpriced catagory.
About 90% of stuff I see folk buying/asking about on here IMO

Everything from Aldi is cut for Danny Devito.
There's a Cove G-Spot (like mine) in Pinkbike up for £1900, a fine, nay fantastic bike to ride and have fun on - but it's never going to sell for that, too leftfield a brand, and 26" - he'd be lucky to get half that.
Any headset that isn't an FSA Orbit II.
Chain guides still top my list of overpriced bike stuff
branded brake pads. barefaced robbery.
Anything to do with mountain biking. 'trail builders gloves' £30 that look like riggers gloves for£5. Trail building tool ( reviewed in one of the mags) listed at £75 similar to a £14 mattock . mental prices for shorts especially when the are over £90 and when reviewed the reviewers find faults. I use Aldi shorts which work for me ( cost £6) and decathlon ( £14) are the name brands 10 x better? Plus 1 for brake pads ( the branded ones eg Shimano or Avid) and finally brake fluid !
Oakleys - £150+ for a pair of plastic sunglasses is quite frankly mad.
However, the sales bullsh*t appears to work as I've got two pairs - Gascans for driving and Racing Jackets for riding.
(Note - didn't pay full price for either)
STW Towers publishes a short article on massively overpriced stuff every Friday.
Baggies are pretty bad, even branded trail running shorts only cost around £35 so how can mtb baggies be £60+?
Fox forks, anything by SRAM branded as 1X.
Rapha - goes without saying really as that's part of it's brand 'appeal'.
Land Rovers, they are ridiculously over priced, Timberland Jeans, NIKE Trainers, as you have all said anything MTB specific has an over inflated price tag, personally ALDI cycling clobber is gash, it's uncomfortouble and is obviously modelled around Julian Clary's physique.
OH, and warburtons Sandwich Thins, how ****in stupidly expensive are they, Nice Tho, like SC Bycicles...... Nice but not worth the money.
I've just bought a new camera. Official Sony batteries are 76 quid!!!
Half decent disposable razors.

My MTB baggies- altura mayhems- are great, I just bought another pair for £19.99

Usual level of internet agreement then...
Bike clothing is starting to get ridiculous, when did it become normal for baggies to be above 50GBP?
Add to that any clothing from a Scandinavian brand, be it Sweet Protection or POC.
SC Nomads, sure they are nice looking and very capable, but what are you paying for, it cant be the race pedigree (not inc DH obviously)?
Amedias, , have you not seen Danny Devito since he went to Yoga?
I find it too tight, too short in the body and too long in the arm,
We're obviously not shopping in the same ALDI,

or making generalisations based on a limited survey sample
Second baggies, since Enduro became a thing they seem to have rocketed in price. Even "budget brand" Endura are pushing it a bit with £50 for Singletrack 2s.

The lenses are demonstrably better though, as shown by the my face gets burnt wearing them. Whether or not said UV is all that bad for my eyes I don't know but I think Oakley have value. Plus they have done a couple of refurbs on mine that basically amounted to free new glasses over the years, gratis. Don't think they are bad value, expensive yes, but worth it.
Anything made by POC.
You would need to know the manufacturing costs amongst other costs to know whether something was overpriced.
Just because it costs more than you think it should does not mean it is overpriced.
In theory you may think something was overpriced even if it was selling at a loss.
Having just lost mine, can I also add replacement garmin HRM straps.
🙁
I have some Oakley Flak Jackets and the frames are extremely average given the price. There's a very obvious moulding line across the top and looking at them again now, I've just noticed the grey finish is already wearing off on the inside of the arms. I've probably not worn them more than two dozen times.
The lenses, however, are excellent. That's where the value is.
I cant help it IF either,
NORMAL sized folk get in there first and sweep everything up leaving the rest of "ME" to pick through EVERYTHING else left in the Display thats exactly the same size, poorly made and cheap in quality.
Bizarre thread reversal, from complaining about stuff that's overpriced to now complaining that Aldi stuff is cheap, poor quality, poorly made and doesn't fit you.
Why exactly are you going and rummaging through it then? colour me confused 😕
FWIW, I have a couple of tops and softshell jackets from Aldi, they fit me fine (Medium so I guess normal sized?), are decent enough quality, especially for the price (< £10) and I've always just walked in and picked them up while passing, no camping out early or anything...
Whether or not said UV is all that bad for my eyes I don't know but I think Oakley have value.
Even £10 sunglasses from a reputable retailer will resist UV. My Oakleys are not IMO any better than the Rudy Projects I had before. In fact I think I prefer the Rudy Projects as they did some lenses with nice tint graduations that were ace for cycling and affordable at ~£30.
Same here i dont camp outside either, it depends how you look at it. At £5 its overpriced if it doesn't fit and i don't wear it.
By that rationale a Haglofs base layer at £40, Is that expensive if you wear it most rides? on and off the bike.
See how you thought Medium was Normal. Being a Large fit Myself i thought i was Normal.
I wouldn't fit in an M and there are always those in the bins. A bit like Buying trainers for me there's never any left in a 10. I could buy a Size 9 but i'd just be wasting my money.
anything "made" by santa cruz.

Well why would you buy it then?
I agree it would be a waste of your money but that is not the same thing as them being overpriced.
They're very reasonably priced but sadly don't suit your requirements. That's not the same thing at all!
See how you thought Medium was Normal. Being a Large fit Myself i thought i was Normal.
POV yes, but I thought by definition the medium size would be the norm, otherwise large isn't large is it? By its very definition anything 'large' must be comparatively bigger than 'normal' ?
I think we've drifted off topic....

And anything with S works written on it. £10K for a bike with own brand kit? Get to ***k! Dickheads.
I wouldn't pay that but specialized own brand is often just as good as aftermarket stuff. Though often terrible. Those wheels, tyres etc are first class, the dropper's a bit uncompetitive though.
Put it another way, the frame's "own brand", if you trust them to make a frame why not a bar?
Because it's a bloody rip off that's why!
There is no way that those santa cruz's can be over priced compared to this.
Is it normal for people to think things are over priced if they cant afford them?
Seems to be the case in a lot of examples I see.

@Wrecker- it's also not £10000, I think you've spotted a dollar price maybe?
Rich is all relevant though. I'm certainly not rich but don't have hatred towards things if I cant afford them.
I will always post about Oakleys and price I bought one pair of half jackets over 10 years ago all the rubber bits have worn out and been replaced free of charge .
I have had numerous incidents where they have hit objects and survived.
From a face plant I have a small v shaped scar on my cheek bone and a chip to the bone. The oakleys have an identical mark dead centre of the corresponding lens where the rock hit my eye first . I can only speculate what would have happened to my eye with no or cheaper lenses . The lens and glasses were still useable afterwards.
When the frame finally gave up they sold me a new one for £30.
one pair of glasses £120 new+ £30 over 10 years wear is less than £15 a year, plus eye saved = priceless not overpriced.

But the question is, would a new pair of £15 (or less) glasses each year have been equally good, or heaven forbid, just a couple of pairs of much cheaper glasses performed as well over the same time period.
Frame durability is likely to be on a par with others as the frames are nothing special. Lens toughness/strength, is also on a par with any other polycarb lenses, so the only differentiating factor becomes optic quality, which didn't even feature in your list of positives.
In which case they do start to look overpriced.
Disclaimer - Oakley (and cheaper alternatives) owner just putting forward counter view.
Any else think chainrings are expensive? I doubt it and I expect I'll get flamed but compared to full chainset and bb replacing chainrings seems quite expensive. Certainly on triples not that anyone uses them anymore!
