As title. I have a part share in my twelve year olds but I'm not getting to borrow it much, I no longer live with him.
Seem fun for playing on and I could use it on my short ride to work. Wonder if the novelty wears off and it sits in the shed?

I'm over 40 and don't use it much TBH.
At least kids will grow into it.

If I wanted a play bike would get a smallish DJ frame, Dialled Holeshot for instance and set it up 1x9. But that's just me.

I bought a BMX @ 30, I found I just didn't have the time to ride it enough to get any good on it.

bought my first bmx at 47.. love it much better for riding with my primary school kids than my 5 as i 'm thier level.
AND whilst drinking with the mums in the street last summer one of the hotties said it was way cool for a fat old bloke to be riding BMX.. benifits all round!

That's encouraging!
DJ bikes tempting but much more cost. BMX are nice and simple.
Have plenty of time on my hands and need to sort some basic skills out.

No quite as old as you duffers (31) but I recently bought a bmx. I love it and ride it all the time.

If I don't fancy getting the mtb out I go for a quick local blast. Bunny hopping, manualling and skidding like a 10 year old. Great fun 😀

but how do the kids feel when somebody who is older than their dad rolls aup and starts playing, and worse still how do the other parents feel.

But i would love one.

I'd love one! Thinking of getting one for my son at Christmas (he'll be 10)
20 or 24 for an old man then?

20 inch is proper bmx. 24" cruisers are a bit like 29'ers, for riders with little skill 😉

bmxes are awesome, can't wait to get one again. You'll appreciate how much easier they are to jump and ride park on, and how robust they feel.

I love my bmx
can't imagine doing vert/360s/flips etc on any other bike

(whereas I can just imagine it on a bmx 😆 )

... and, incidentally, I sort of do regret it since I almost never ride it and I NEVER do what would be recognised as BMX on it (commute from parking space to work on a few days of the year when I know it'll be dry both ways)

A folding bike would suit me far better 😥

(are all BMXs ded heavy ?)

That's a lot of seat post and a nearly level saddle flip. Can you sit on it?

Mine, bought in post 30's crisis. Used to practice flatland stuff, tailwhips etc. Not ridden for few years though, bit rusty now. (Bike & rider).

went to the manchester national cycle centre (@veleodrome) last night to get accredited to ride the national track. was loads of fun and considering buying a cheapish ride to take down there regularly. good work out and defo benefit for mtb. would def recommend it for anyone local. cheap as well, even cheaper with a manchester postcode!

42 and rode mine for the first time in ages today.
Don't think i'll ever get rid of one altogether and hoping the kids will want to race or go to the skatepark in a couple of years time with their old man.

Prepare to have an aching body though, even if its only from riding not crashing.

i know a fair few people who ride bmx who are aged around 40. I'd say if you have never ridden one before, and mainly want to ride tracks or use it just to mess around on on the way to work etc, 24 inch wheels are definitely worth considering. They feel much nicer on a track to me, and are easier to adapt to if youre coming from mtbs.

You can't call yourself a real cyclist if you don't have a bmx!
Sort of makes me think of Clarckson saying you are not a petrol head if you haven't owned an Alfa Romeo.
Thankfully a bmx is a lot cheaper and takes up less space. But not less painful.
I have some awesome scars from falling of my 20inch race bike at 35 years young.
I had a cruiser and loved it. Found it more suitable to my ogre frame.
Currently have a cruiser frame in the garage somewhere.
I got into bmx when I was working 24/7 and didn't get to see my mountain bikes, carried a specialized Vegas In the back of the van, bought for 15 quid off eBay and rode all the skate parks on my lunch breaks.
The kids always seemed greatful I was around because co-ordless bullies would clear off.
But even the really good older kids would give an appreciative nod in my direction as if to say well done for trying old man.
Easily the greatest full body work out!
I must get another 20" bike!

I've got one and love it. Not far off that age now. Been to a few skate-parks and bmx tracks and will be returning if the summer ever comes. However I also just 'enjoy riding it around' too. 🙂

So what cheap bmx for a 42 yr old to share with his 11 year old lad?
Last yr I got him a £35 diamond back from a car boot. It was way too heavy and just generally rubbish I think. It got pinched a few months later and hasn't been replaced. All this talk of sharing a bike has set me thinking....

I got a 24" cruiser earlier this year, first few rides we just down the park with the kids. Last weekend I finally made it to the bmx track. Absolutely loved it, really felt my pumping improve and started to feel a bit of flow. Need to get back down soon to try and get the wheels in the air properly.

The only down side was the seized up back which hit me a few hours after I got home. Still recovering a week later.

A relative youngster for thread title at 35 I started bmx when got chance to do the L2 Bmx coaching certificate, now help at the Manchester indoor each week, ride weekly too.

Loving it, a break from my other cycling and learning new skills / challenging myself too, and it's a great workout for the whole body.

Everyone should at least try Bmx, and as said in posts above they don't take up much space at all.

OTP Haro Pro xl for me.

SNAP! My race BMX is a haro pro too.
(see what I did there? ^^ )
Out of interest, how tall are you?

Talking of which, to the guy who asked about a bike to share with his 11yr old, unless you're close in height, jist don't! Get something each that fits. A decent BMX costs less than an mtb fork.

My BMX has proved very useful- as long as it's hanging up in the garage never being ridden, I'm not likely to buy another BMX. If it were gone, I probably would, then I'd hang it up in the garage and never ride it.

That's me convinced. Not that I need huge persasion to want another bike.
I actually have my son's this weekend, first borrow since he got it at Xmas. Did a couple of miles yesterday and found it fine for that sort of distance. Fitted some better pedals today and put some plugs in the bar ends as that was the only damage he'd done so far.
Like the feel of 20" so no cruiser. There's also 22" BMX now, a middle size between the two. No really. 😀

Bang on.

I have a 24, but then I have no skills. Will be putting my son's flite junior in the classifieds soon as well for those looking for a bike for their kids.

GW - I'm 6ft 3

cruiser would've been one I could ride to the track from home, but no regrets getting a 20" tho, feels lively, if not ideal over 7 road miles 🙂
