for those of you how aren't watching, get on Iplayer later to do so. quite interesting and emotional. very good documentary IMO
very good documentary.
its a shame everybody decided to watch the Fairy Job mother instead!
Well worth watching.
Caught half of it, very good.
I enjoyed that.
Sometimes I miss being in, sometimes Im glad I got out.
A great documentary , whether you agree with the war or not these guys deserve amazing respect. Most are just young lads and get paid peanuts for fighting in a war thats not our own.
I have nothing but utter respect for anyone on the frontline and these guys showed exactly the type of people the british army is made up from.
Should've been on bbc1. Proper telly that.
Yeah, I did wonder why it was being broadcast on Three certainly worth of primetime BBC.
agreed, showed the human frailty and humbleness that makes the uk armed forces so very very special. Why stick something as significant as this on bbc 3? prime bbc2 material.
so much respect for these guys
..........and girls, please. ๐
Only caught the 2nd half. Good viewing

Very good telly and a big well done to them for doing the job they been sent to do.

some people dont like their details posted online - just a thought
great viewing, kinda looking forward to the next one, but not at the same time
The closest I've seen combat was band of brothers, which the combat footage reminded me of.
With all the technology, the laser guided bombs dropped from thousands of feet up by sophisticated jets, the UCAV's firing hellfire missiles, the Tlam's fired from hundreds of miles away, all this stand off weaponry, but to actually do the job it takes a soldier to do the same thing soldiers from history have done.
It's boots on the ground as always. It's good that soldiers can now use technology to show the public what it's like.
three cheers for the muppets willing to shoot someone for a pittance, never understood that mentality..

tell me this is a quote and not something you believe.
Why what's wrong with it?tell me this is a quote and not something you believe.
so you are saying the people in the armed forces fighting in Afganistan are muppets who like shooting people for a pittance?
You're a , that's what wrong with it.
Yes. Why else are they there? They are there until their masters have finally decided they have gotten some other unsavioury regime in place that can keep the natives in check without their back up..so you are saying the people in the armed forces fighting in Afganistan are muppets who like shooting people for a pittance?
What do you think they are doing? Creating democracy or some such nonsense? They are not heroes, as we are so often told, but purely mercenaries willing to do other peoples bidding.
Aw, i'm hurt..You're a , that's what wrong with it.
this is not what this thread is about, now crawl back under your bridge or start another thread to discuss the semantics of the Afgan war.
OK, carry on with your 'hero' worshiping!this is not what this thread is about, now crawl back under your bridge and start another thread to discuss the semantics of the Afgan war.
Are these the same muppets who could be stitching you back together in A&E after a bike fall? Or worse?
Of course, other people's bidding may include humantarian aid perhaps.
Yes never criticise our brave boys/girls even when you disagree with the war, it is unwinable and many many civilians have died as a reult of our efforts.
For balance the choice on Radio 4 had an interview with Joe Glenton who went AWOL rather than do another tour.

I believe that when British military personnel submit themselves to the service of the nation and put their bodies into harm's way, the government that sends them into battle is obliged to ensure that the cause is just and right, i.e. for the protection of life and liberty.
The war in Afghanistan is not reducing the terrorist risk, far from improving Afghan lives it is bringing death and devastation to their country. Britain has no business there.
I do not believe that our cause in Afghanistan is just or right. I implore you, Sir, to bring our soldiers home.
not a quote from the programme
May include, it's hardly their main function.Of course, other people's bidding may include humantarian aid perhaps.
its irrelivent whether we should be there or not, the people in the army have a duty to follow orders and we have a duty to support them, not make them out to be 'muppets who like to shoot people for a pittance'.

I can't agree with that. They aren't conscripted, it's not ww2, they have a choice in the matter.
TBH its not about what you agree with or not. the simple matter of the fact is that those people are out there, they are out there now whether you or any other person likes it or not so if you have nothing nice to say then keep your opinions to yourself.
oh dear thread highjacked by another ****,
oh well, huge respect for the boys doing a tough job and making big sacrifices, i don't really care for the reasons but will always support those guys out there at on the thin red line.
Maybe there's been a misunderstanding between 'hero-worship' and 'respect' here. I've never been able to stomach the 'against the war, but support the troops' argument. It just seems (somewhat obviously now)like a total cop-out way of avoiding getting called a c***.
I don't support the war, and I don't support the troops. I do respect them for doing it though. I'll just never be able to view them all as heroes (though I'm sure individual heroic acts occur) just for being there.

Why the hell would you do that? Are you really saying that we're not allowed to have an opinion because it would happen anyway?
They are there until their masters have finally decided they have gotten some other unsavioury regime in place that can keep the natives in check without their back up..What do you think they are doing? My bold. Their masters and the other people whose bidding they do are the politicians that you voted for. As Clausewitz said "war is an extension of politics". The military go and do what the democratically elected politicians want where they want. If you voted then take it up with your elected leaders. If you didn't, find another system you like.
It was very good. It showed how much it hurts and what happens to those who survive.
There sent there by the people you vote for.
Our version of democracy is like a magicians card trick, we get to vote for the "card" offered by the magician.
You are all wasting your time feeding this troll , he nailed his colours to the mast back In the Old Firm thread a few months back. Ironic that he supports a terrorist organisation that likes to blow up Innocent children In Warrington and old folks In Enniskillen. Sad man . ๐
That would be all fine and well if we lived under a system that did the bidding of the people rather than corporate interests.. until we do people have a duty to speak out against war and soldiers should have a duty to grow a brain. My bold. Their masters and the other people whose bidding they do are the politicians that you voted for. As Clausewitz said "war is an extension of politics". you have no clue of my opinions on anything, admission of singing a few songs and having an interest in history, don't amount to support for bugger all..You are all wasting your time feeding this troll , he nailed his colours to the mast back In the Old Firm thread a few months back. Do you think these `brainless muppets'as you call them, can pick and choose what conflicts they serve in or in deed what peace keeping or aid work they do? They can't go on strike you know. Or would you prefer we didn't have any Armed Forces?
Bloody hell! I knew I recognised the sargeant from MTBing!
Watching the whole thing thinking, that guy is so familiar... It was Pants! What a geezer.
I must say, I haven't read whatever is causing the arguments on this thread, but when I was younger I had no respect for soldiers and other military types going to war, but I grew up.
its a difficult one isn't it?
on the one hand its hard not feel a good deal of pride and support for what the armed forces have to do and the effects that it has on them
BUT
the context of their service has to be taken into account. this is not a great crusade, it is not the free world fighting back against the forces of darkness, it is not noble or just or proportionate. I feel extremely angry that men and women from my country are fighting, killing and dying in a pointless war that has been created to further western interests and to protect the interests of the few over the needs of the many.
It is utterly wrong and as ever its the common folks on both sides who bleed and whose families mourn.
Yep, totally agree.
they volunteer for it, so yes they do have a choice. these people don't grow up in a vaccum, I certainly didn't when the army came to my school in the 90's and tried to recruit me, i knew it was wrong and didn't sign up.Do you think these `brainless muppets'as you call them, can pick and choose what conflicts they serve in or in deed what peace keeping or aid work they do?
