I am after a new light for riding after work. I am currently using a Dinotte 200 Lumen one which has a great beam but the 4xAA battery holder sucks.
I am after one of a similar brightness, either rechargable or with a decent AA battery compartment.

Oh, and it's gotta be under £100

P7 from Hong Kong with two batteries and charger about £40 (will give you three hours on max beam with two batteries)and a set of the new Cat Eye flahing little globes that put out light sideways (£19) Twofish lockblock for the bars for the P7(£7).

I've a 200L and I know what you mean about the battery holder.
I've played with the Hope Vision 1 its a single unit and it pretty nice.

I'm currenty using an Airlight SL1 (I guess that's the same as a P7). It's pretty floody (for an off road light) so great for visibility in traffic. I run it on its lowest setting when it's dark and flashing in the morning when it's still twilight.

How does the Hope 1 beam compare to the Dinotte?

The P7 is stunningly bright but as with a lot of the high powered modern lights there is no side output hence the flashing cateye globe lights. My P7 is the five function switch version puts out about 700 lumens on max, half that on medium and about 100 on low. In flashing mode it flashes at the max output-it is the best light bar none in terms of value for money.

Buy an exposure white eye/redeye combo, and run it off a set of 18650s, bit of soldering involved, but mine cost about £60 all in, does something like 10 hrs on a charge.

only got to play with the hope in the garden and i didnt have the dinotte handy to compare side by side. seemed nice but it didn't blow me away...unlike the bastid which is just rude for the money.

No help to you, but for anyone with a tired old Lumi halogen (or any other light based on an MR11 bulb, this single LED from Cutter, pretty much plugs straight in, requires no heat sink, and produces an excellent 'tight mid' type beam. I went for the cool white, 430 lumens, WH tint version.
Required light soldering and a glass front (I just carefully removed the front from my old halogen lamp and silicon/superglued it on - when I say "I", a mate did it). About £30

The ideal solution would be to convert my Dinotte to be able to use a Li ion rechargable, but not sure if this is possible.

I like my Ayup's for commuting - lasst 6 hours on a single charge and dims when running out. Maybe a bit costly at the mo in comparison to others on the market and not UK idstributer at present?

I'm content with my Hope vision 1 but at 240 lumens -will you notice a huge difference?

I just like using cheaper rechargeable AA 2800mh compared to battery packs but only get 3 hrs on max.

If you have the cash I would go for the Ayups just for the backup service and longer life of the battery but it does cost £75 for the battery after a a good years use.

Dam I think they are over £100! doh!

Hope Vision one-was £65 in an ad last month...well thats what I paid!

Mikey74.

I was just about to suggest contacting Smudge. He could probably sort a battery for you, so you could keep your Dinotte.

On the P7 thing. And I know there'll be loads who have had a different experience, but.

A guy I know, bought a P7 around this time last year. Mounted it to the bars of his SCR and commutes out of London into Essex. After last winter on the road, and into this winter, his P7 has now given up.

We suspect that with the higher tyre pressures and rigid frame of his road bike, the vibration has bust his P7.

Hes now running one of my pre-production-spec lights on loan, until the final ones are finished.
He says the light I've lent him for testing is too bright on hi, for London, so runs it on low and gets quite good run times from the Battery I bought from Smudge.

So, if I were you, and if you are happy with your current light, then look into getting a battery from Smudge and just using a velcro battery bag. I think the one that alot of Troutlight users have gone for is the Lumicycle Elite battery bag, but better get that confirmed.

🙂

L.

Thanks for the information. I will speak to my Dad first to see if he can do anything as he is a bit of an electronics wiz.

Would be interesting to see how the new Smart 2W Lunar 35 front light performs - could be a pretty decent road light - £35 a pop could make a pretty decent setup with two for £70...

What is wrong with the AA battery bag? Is it that the bag itself is shonky, or is it that you just don't want to use AA batteries?

Dinotte appear to sell the lithium ion batteries for their systems quite cheap (50 or 70$ depending on size), can't you just buy one of those for your light, or do they not swap over like that?

The battery bag itself is not too bad but the battery holder is very flimsy and does not hold the batteries tightly, leading to some very awkward 'hurtling down a pitch black road at 30mph in the complete darkness' moments on the occasions when the light turns off by itself, because either the battery has jumped out or the connector has disconnected.

Unfortunately the Dinotte Li-ion batteries do not work on the AA versions as they apparently run off a different current, or something like that.

I've been considering an RSP Asteri 3, which has the advantage (for me) that it easily clips on/off the bars, no faffing with a battery bag on an already crowded commuter bike.
