Hi
Ive got a garmin 1000 , I've never been that impressed with the mapping mainly because I've always been used to Ordnance survey maps
I've noticed you can buy OSM for it
Has anyone done this ?
Is it hard to change the unit to OSM ?
Is it worth changing ?

Thanks in advance

I've noticed you can buy OSM for it
You can get OSM maps for free as well
The standard maps that are built in to the Edge 1000 actually use OSM data

There are lots of places to get free OSM 'based' maps for your 1000. Personally I use

https://openmtbmap.org/ - for mountainbiking
https://www.velomap.org/ - for roadbiking

but in reality the built in maps are really rather good and have the advantage over the ones I linked to in that the address find is better

To use the maps just follow the instructions on https://openmtbmap.org/tutorials/beginnners_windows/ but the basic technique is
install garmin basecamp on your computer (if you haven't already)
download a map from one of the links above
run the install program
The map should then be in basecamp. You can use basecamp to send the map to your Edge1000

But to answer your last question - there really isn't much point. You can I believe get some maps that use OSM data but have been styled to look like OS maps - maybe that's what you need to look at

Good luck

The Garmin maps are OSM aren't they? Are they available "for free" from Garmin or do they have their customised version that they will only supply on purchase of a device?

(I'm surprised that OSM doesn't have an open source licence of some kind that requires reissue)

The OP is asking about Ordnance Survey Maps, not Open Street Maps.

Got you.

I've used both on Garmin - I had full UK Ord Survey mapping on an eTrex 30 and now have Garmin's Open Street Map based mapping on an Edge Touring.

Personally I prefer the Garmin mapping. It definitely wouldn't be as good as OrdSurv as a printed map or on a large screen but on an Edge there is simply too much detail on the screen to be useful and the colours are not easy to read in sunlight. For navigation use both on and off road I think the Garmin is more successful.

Caveat - the 1000 has a larger, probably higher resolution, screen but I still think plotting routes using Ord Survey on a Computer and navigating using Garmin maps on device is the way to go.

Apologies, bit of a hijack here.
I have an Edge Touring, with OS GB maps on a card. If I were to buy an Edge 1000 (no card slot I believe?), could I download the maps from the card onto the PC, and then upload them into the 1000?

No, Garmin's OrdSurv mapping is locked either to a card or to a device.

Thanks, just wondered.
It might not be "cough" a Garmin card "cough"...
