Thinking of this for commuting and maybe the White Roads classic event.

Thoughts on the RX9?

It was overpriced/underspecced new. If it’s in good nick then £400ish wouldn’t be a bad offer.

I have one , a grey one i think from a year after that . Its my only road bike so gets used for commuting and road riding . Its fine for me at both , its a pretty comfy if sturdy bike . only thing i changed were the tyres for proper road ones .

Shite.

It's still a bike though, if you like it then buy it.

I'd be offering about two hundred quid for it. Surprised you can't get a brand new bike that's better specced for a similar amount.

Like Jambo said, they were poor when they came out.

What would four hundred get you second hand in the MTB world? I'd have thought more than a bottom spec groupset, cheap wheels, cable discs and rigid forks...

I've got plenty of MTB choices, a 29er nice Parkwood for example, running light fastish XC rubber. I was thinking this would be lighter, faster, but if that's unlikely to be the case then there's no point spending £400.

i am a lot quicker on mine on the road than my mtb so i think your pretty safe on that front . £450 would get you a flat bar boardman hybrid commuter .

Thanks Moon.

I have a weird aversion to Boardman bikes for some reason unknown to me.

I thought about flat bar hybrid type thing too

https://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/CBPXXLAAPEX1FLAT/planet-x-xla-sram-apex-1-flat-bar-cyclocross-bike

This one appealed above.

In an ideal world i would have something like that and a proper road bike but the orange does both well enough for me . I would definitely prefer a flat bar for commuting but not sure i would want to do longer road rides with one .

I can't see what year that one listed is and I think it will be ok off the photo's, but they were recalled for the forks in 2014

The video for it was great, it was one of the deciding factors in making me consider this type of bike.

To be fair it was over priced and under specced at launch, but if you are willing to accept it's a compromise between a road and mountain bike, not excellent at anything but OK as an all rounder then you won't go far wrong.

I've had an aluminium frame and fork Bianchi flat bar hybrid with Alivio shifters and a deore mech, cable discs etc and now have a Charge Plug steel drop bar bike with Sora and cable discs. They both do the same job, just slightly differently, the Orange RX9 would do the same again. If you want one then go for it, it'll probably be faster than your MTB due to a more efficient riding position etc.

Maybe the Hybrid is a better idea really. Something like a Boardman Pro, seems to weigh 9kg, which is decent and should fly along.

I love Orange and have loads of them. I got one of the mk2 silver ones as I thought a lighter road biased bike might help me get more miles in. Could never get my head round how heavy it was which kind of defeated the purpose so I sold it on virtually unused and bought a p7, which is ace.

If I were you i’d spend the money making the Parkwood more roadie.

And you're suckered because it's an Orange. I reckon it's all about the brands. Don't get me wrong, I'm the same. I'm prepared to shell out more because I like the brand, but if you want to know, I'm pretty sure that's the reason.

At this price point surely a Triban from Decathlon is the answer. My mate has put many many miles on his both commuting and holidaying in France. Seems great for the money. Granted rim brakes.

I've been looking at these gravel bikes recently too, but how much difference would getting a gravel bike make, over just getting some skinny fast tyres for my hardtail? Its an 45650b by the way, it'd be for commuting about 9 miles each way.

Also earlier on this week Halfords have a voodoo gravel bike On sale for just over £400, which looked pretty good value OP.

Not much from my experience above unless you get a light one but that means spending loads I'd imagine.

I had one that i bought cheap from Orange direct as an ex demo. I changed the wheels as they were tosh, but I loved it. It was great for some of the crap back lanes around North Wales and I took it off road a few times.

Sold it and bought a slate as I wanted something different. For £400.00 it seems fine

Which wheels did you get to replace the originals monkeysfeet?

I think changing the wheels on my RX9 would be the best upgrade if anyone could recommend anything?

The only possible reason for buying one, new or 2nd hand, is that you like Orange MTBs and want an Orange road bike. Which is as good a reason as any, IMO.

Looks to me like the right STI is a bit bent, and what has happened to that rear mech?

It’s an ok bike, but overpriced IMO

overpriced new, overpriced now. I've seen much nicer C'dale Synapse Discs with 105 go for £500 (which is fair given they were widely reduced to £1K new). I paid £600 for a new-old-stock Saracen Hack which was a similar bike and spec to the RX9.

@ S1mmo I had a set of Hope Pro 2 hubs built on to 29er Stans rims. Ran them with narrow tyres so I knew I had something reliable when I went off road.

Blatant advertisement advertisement in 3, 2 and 1...........

I might be selling a 2017 NS RAG+ in medium. Stock spec bar the stem and cowchipper bars. Email in profile if interested. Just not quite decided yet as it's a great bike.

End shockingly non-stealthy ad.

I bought a Boost 110mm front off a forum member, that will go in the Parkwood instead along with some MAxxis XC rubber. I've got a 2nd wheel already but it's not only non boost, but non-tubeless, so i'll Tubeless this one and i've then got both tough burly treaded rubber and XC fast stuff.

Sure, it's not proper full on semi-slicks, but it's quick enough for most of the things i want/need.
