howdy folks please please please can someone confirm on a 18" five frame how many full links the the chain should have? ive got it at 54 plus a powerlink? does that sound a bit tight?

im still getting an annoying chain noise, rubbing or stretching etc and its driving me insane, this is a new chain and cassette so not worn ๐Ÿ™ i have tried everything else imaginable now ๐Ÿ™ lubing it massively seems to cure it for a ride, then if i leave it a few days and dont put anymore on it comes back ๐Ÿ™

now actually just wondering if i have the chain perhaps a little to short?

Wrap chain round big ring on front and biggest rear sprocket add 2 links job done.

I make it... 106.5 links. Unless you are using a coil shock, then it's 109.53

Excuse me for saying this in a less than polite way, but 'bollix' when you are on a single pivot.

Do that, jump off the first big jump and watch what happens! Instead let all the air out of the shock and check that at full compression/travel there is still a little bit of movement left for the rear mech when in big/big.

Well gavinb you might be right but I've had 2 chains over the years on my 18 inch 5 and they have been faultless.

Granny ring to the big rear cog on the cassette, the rear mech should be 90 degree angle to the floor.

Granny ring to the small rear cog on the cassette, the rear mech should be 45 degree angle to the floor.

This is not a mathematical solution, but has always worked for me.

funny, Ive used middle ring and smallest sprocket, rear mech cage 90 degree to floor as my rule of thumb for setting up chains in the basis it looks right (and is actually pretty close to the big/big+2 rule). Anyone who rides big/big deserves to have a mechanical failure, its against The Rules (like bar ends on risers, tyre logos and valves not aligned and other heinous crimes).

To the OP, is your chain fouling/rubbing on your front mech-does it only do it in extreme gears (either biggest or smallest sprockets)? Have you tried fine tuning the mech position (1/4 to 1/2 turn either way on barrel adjuster on front shifter)?

Not seen an MTB equivalent, we all know them but has anyone written them down?
