how often do these need changing (swing arm)and how can you tell when they need replacing... cheers
wps i got alot of mysterious 'creaking' on cranks when applying pressure ie when climbing....but not on flat trails... somwtimes its the quick release, so untightend then tightend, made sure all bolts are tight,.. still getting creaking noise... checked for play etc ... just annoying..lol anybody ...?
not very often.
grab the saddle and lift - if you feel a small knock then this is shock bushes. lower one wears more quickly than upper as it moves more.
to check the pivot bearings deflate and unbolt the shock, then lift the swing arm and lower it again, and check for side to side movement. if it feels rough, or there is side-to-side movement, replace the bearings. otherwise look elsewhere. i'd suspect pedals, bb, and qr ( though i see you've looked at that ) before the swing arm bearings if it were me.
try tightening the rear qr uber tight they are really bad for creaking coming from there
ok cheers... ๐
I only got two years out of mine but it did see a stupid amount of action, mostly wet.
As mentioned, gently start to left rear of bike from back of saddle, if you feel knocking they need doing. Pivot bearings, mine were probably gone before I actually felt anything.
If the bearings are fine then tighten the rear quick release
as this gives similar noises and also check the bottom bracket too.
"i got alot of mysterious 'creaking' on cranks when applying pressure ie when climbing"
Mine was doing this the other week. Putting a little grease around the rear wheel drop outs stopped it. I could not believe the amount of noise it was making and that grease between the drop out and wheel axle would stop it, but it did.... :0)
PS. My main pivot bearing lasted about 2 years, never made a noise but you could feel the play when twisting the rear wheel and holding the saddle. Simple and cheap to replace when they do go.....
mine used to last 12-18months
+1 for greasing dropouts, pedal threads, crank arm bolts and tightening the qr skewers really tight. It's amazing how much the little sounds get amplified. The above sorted mine out.
I had the same problem - caused by a build up of dirt between the dust covers over the pivot bearings and the 'chocks' that hold the swingarm on the bearings. Remove both, clean and when replacing make sure the chock is exactly lined up before tightening down the 5mm bolt. I do this now as a routine every 6 months or so with no further creaking problems.
theres no knocking sound .... i,ll do abit of greasing then ๐
+1 greasing the dropouts, and also grease the cam part of the QR leaver as you can then tighten it easier.
Obviously the creaking qr is a common issue with the 5. Does anyone know if it's because of the bike (swing arm), the standard squewer, or the hub? Someone mentioned the other day that it was pro2 hubs that caused this problem??
Greasing dropouts?! ๐ฏ
I just tighten mine up. I think the problem is simply that the box-section swingarm amplifies the sound greatly, so you hear it. It probably happens silently with other bikes.
And the original shock bushing lasted a year ish - replaced with the plastic ones from TFTuned, and they seem to be holding up nicely.
2-3 for the bearings.
as its a 5 the creeek will be the rear qr skewer.also worth checking on 5s that the wheel is fully home in the drop outs.
I had plenty of creaks for a while and did a few things to sort it.
Scraped the paint off the dropouts and replaced the shock mounted with the TFtuned HD kit to get rid of the 'tophats'.
