I'm sure this has been covered before, but I couldn't find the answer. I believe I have worn bearing/bushes on my 5, but how do you tell if it is the shock bushes or the main pivot bearings that are worn? On mine, if you grab the seat tube you can feel play if you move it up and down, but I can't make up my mind where the play is!

Lift the bike by the bottom of the seat a little and drop - do it a few times - is there a rattling? Thats what I always say - so I would think its the bottom bushing ๐Ÿ™‚

Most likely to be the bottom bushing on the shock, the end that attaches to the swing arm. It'll get worse reasonably quickly, so that'll help you decide which one it is! Jam your finger against the shock shaft and the bracket on the swingarm and you should be able to feel the two moving independently (play). At least that's what happening on mine just now!

I think there is, you can hear a rattle when riding it as well. By the bottom bush, do you mean the main swingarm bearing?

edit: bottom bush question answered whilst I was typing, thanks!

no the shock bushing is more likely to make that sound than the main pivot bearings - but as iainc says try it without the shock in ? - are the shock pivot bolts tight?

3rd the removal of the shock first. Usually you can tell very easily if the pivot bearings are worn once they are free of the shock. They'll feel grindy or notched, IME.
