[#1453528]

I know i asked this yesterday but did not get a suitable reply (i.e. one i could understand!!)

Have an 11-34 cassette

What front chainring combination would give me:
A/ the least duplicated ratios
B/ The best usable ratios
C/ As close to a triple but with 2 rings

22 and 36 chainrings - you loose one or two gears from the top compared to a 44 - thats all,. You need to change down into granny earlier than you would otherwise - I have this set up and use granny 1-7 and all nine with the 36. There is still some overlap in the middle obviously

Thanks TJ

Can you elaborate on the duplication - which gears etc? Re the top end - in real terms - losing 1 or 2 gears - whats that mean?

You don't have the equivalent of the top 2 gears that you would have in the 44 - it means you spin out in the high 20s mph not low 30s.

You would have to work out the ratios yourself - I don't know exactly - I guess granny 3 or 4 and above are duplicated in the 36 ring, with a 27 speed set up you only gt about 15 usable non duplicated gears

Depends to some extent on your riding style and local terrain - I prefer to spin low gears and ride where there are proper hills

28/40 up front

although youll need some special cranks for that ๐Ÿ˜‰

29:42 is a pretty good compromise - middleburns needed for that

You can go 28/40 on any cranks actually.

It's personal though isn't it. I'd find 22/36 too low, Ive not used anything smaller than a 28 in 5 years, and can climb most things that can be climbed, those I can't ride I don't think I'd do in a 22!

I'd say a 26/38 would be less objectionable for most, you'd lose one at each end that way basically. But only you know how you ride, there are no 'optimum ratios', or bikes would all come set up like that. If you want to keep the spread of gears, why not just use a triple...
