Up to 2.4 tyres on 29er wheels.
Just buy a hardtail/rigid 29er people.

My 1994 Univega Alpina 5.3 had dropped chainstays, "Max Mudroom" iirc

Them low chainstays only give a smidge of extra room, you still have to thread the chainstay between the chainring and tyre, just at a place where there is a bit more of a gap.
