Some folk don't go there so much so it's a PSA.

If I want to watch TV I watch a TV but it's nice to be told if there is something I might otherwise miss.

Anyway it's a press release not a Pinkbike article, surely you'd go to the Nordest website in a regular basis to see if they'd introduced something new.

Im not sure if being a nob on here is equivalent to silly boy comments on there?

Another thing. Did you see the post on PB about Tracey Hannah and her concussion?

https://www.pinkbike.com/news/tracey-hannah-and-Darren-Kinnaird-crankworx-rotorua-2018-head-injury-mtb.html

A terrible to happen to a pro rider BUT a great piece of work by the event organisers by making her have decent checks before riding again. And good stuff from Tracey in the comments section.

Not seen that on STW yet. But its news. Obviously what has happened toย Callum Russell is big news but so is this, it is all news. And when will Tracey's come though on SingleTrack, even as a 'this just in"...?

OOPS! I think I misread your comment as wanting an opinion on your PinkBike statement, now I suspect you were after an opinion on the bike. Sorry if that is the case, I completely misread you.

The bike looks great to me. I'd love a Ti gearbox bike and this looks a little more my style than the really stretched out offerings from Sick or Nicolai/MOJO, basically the kind of bike I like but slacker without a massive reach. I couldn't justify a Gnarcissist or a Geometron but this looks peachy.

Had a quick look, but can't see where the break is to fit the belt drive - am I going mad?

Price isn't to bad, Ti frame with XTR/XX1 groupset would not be much cheaper.

Olsen's carbon pinion frame is cheaper though and made in the UK and far more customisable for fit. Prob weighs a bit less too.

Love the idea of a gearbox and could prob even get used to a gripshift but the weight is def. a ย put off for me. Even the new magnesium pinion is still 1kg heavier than the equivalent top mtb geared groupset. 2.2lb is a lot to add to a bike.

The break is in the seatstay, about level with the belt. You can see better from the other side.

Rik, i agree that 1kg is a lot to add to anything thatโ€™s remotely light.

but, all the extra weight will be in a place where its less noticeable, so it probably wont be that bad.

For an idea of what i mean, try comparing a singlespeed bike, with the same frame equipped with a rohloff/alfine, the singlespeed setup will feel better over bumps, due to not having the weight far away from the centre of gravity (the bb).

am i making sense here? Perhaps someone can explain it better than me.

Get what you say about weight distribution, I've ridden a rohloff hardtail and the rear bias felt horrible, but even if you drop some serious cash on lots of carbon components, you end up with a hardtail which weigh as much as 6inch travel carbon enduro full suspension bike

Agreed.

Itโ€™s a (relatively) niche product, I could be tempted if i had a couple of k burning a hole in my pocket though. Moot point however, as I donโ€™t.

Ah, well spotted. Didn't get that far in the pics, but nicely concealed!

Does anybody know the actual weight of all the pinion stuff? So you can actually do a proper comparison with normal gear weights.

so you have:

- c1.12 gearbox and shift/cables

- pinion cranks - I believe these are pretty heavy and you have to use their own brand

- 2 x Gates chainring/cogs and belt

You often here 2.1kg banded around but I think that's just the gearbox only and doesn't include anything else

For me pros of lower maintenance, centralised weight and other things more than balance out the cons of higher weight and higher price.

Oh and as someone with a hardtail heavier than the equivalent full suss, they both have their place and are both fun.

I don't have the piece by piece breakdown but comparing my 1 X 10 drivetrain (Oneup expander on XT cassette) to my C1.12 pinion the 1 X 10 stuff came to just under 2Kg and the Pinion C1.12 was just under 3Kg.ย  Both chain drive, belt may save a few g if not ยฃ.

So the C1.12 makes my bike about a kilo heavier but I am getting 600% range rather than 382%, maybe I should really compare to my previous 2 X 10 set up which would narrow the weight difference by about 274g

centralised weight

You can't understand this, makes a difference .

2.2lb then potentially on top of an 'enduro' hardtail build. Your looking north of 30lb then for a hardtail.

Not sure reduced maintainence (clean after a ride and a new chain/cassette/chainring once a year is worth 1kg. On a commuting bike maybe but on a mountain bike? Hmmm......

I think I'd be happy with the weight penalty even on a hardtail.

The quieter running and lack of semi-regular tweaking appeals.

My Sick titanium hardtail with C1.12 is, I think, a touch over 30lb.ย  That is with almost 1Kg of tyre each end so may slip under 30lb when summer comes and some lighter tyres go on.

I also have a Nicolai Ion GPI with a P1.12 and that is over 36lb with similar tyres.

A pinion bike will never be the lightest, if the lightest weight is important to you you don't want one.
