Morning All,

I bought a 456c back in April due to the generally good reviews and i liked the look of the bike. However 5 months on and the paint work on the bike now looks very tatty, scratched and looks like some one has taken a brillo pad to it. I have been generally very careful with the bike but obviously there will be some minor scuffs but the longetivity of the paint work has been very disappointing to say the least. I have a steel bike that is twice as old and gets used twice as much but isnt have as tatty looking as the 456c.

Is this typical for a carbon bike? Has anyone one had similar problems with the 456c?

Cheers

where is the wear - in places where cables/clothing would rub or just all over?

What are you using to clean it?

The wear and tear is all over the frame and I use a hose and cloth to clean the bike. Obviously there is wear and tear in the usual places such as chain stay but there are scuffs on all tubes as if the paint has just faded.

The finish on mine was so bad I made an agreement with On One that they would refinish it for free after the winter. That didn't happen as I accidentally left it a month longer than I should have to call them. Awful finish, awesome frame.

I thought was part of On Ones charm, all their frames ride well but the finish is crap 🙂

My whippet is the same. I bought it recently second hand so was prepared for it to appear used. It was only yesterday when I dropped a ball-end allen key onto the top tube from about a foot that I saw just how crap the paint is.* I took out a chip about 8mm in diameter! I'd think twice about buying a new one unless I had plans to drown it in helitape, or just resign myself to it looking tatty quickly.

*Disclaimer
My whippet is Silver which I don't think has been offered commercially so it mifght be a pre production special and therefore a paint sample. etc.

I've a gloss raw black one which still looks fine after 18 months. Mate's had two Whippets with the two-colour paint job and decals and they still look like new after a few months.I do know of people who've had the opposite experience, though.

The satin finish on my 456c was very patchy out of the box, like it had been laid down or against something before the laquer had cured. I just thought balls to returning it - get it built and get out on it:)

It's usually covered in crap or being ridden in the dark anyway

I bought a custard yellow one very cheap of On One about 6 weeks back - £250 for a carbon frame

Yes, the paint does chip very easily - but if I do it enough, it'll become a black one!

The bike rides lovely and i'm not very precious - so a few battle scars is giving it some class

£250 for a carbon frame - come on

Great frame! 😀

Mines the satin finish and it's supposed to be raw looking.

This all seems rather irrelevant as to whether or not it's "cheap", or a "good deal". If you buy a mountain bike, you expect the condition to not seriously deteriorate within 6 months.

Just sog act them and they'll probably respray it for you.

To be honest? With On One? I do expect that actually. I paid less for my Inbred frame than I did for the paint on my Explosif.

They just seem to use really poor paint as though someone hasn't really made any effort to find anything decent. Or maybe they are just using a room temp cure as they don't have an oven to stove them in.

I have a matte one - all helitaped up in most key areas - downtube, top tube, sides of heat tube, seat stays and chainstays. But everywhere else is not scuffed from dirt, branches etc etc. I expected it and was going to strip and re-spray the frame at some point but I can't be bothered as if I do I will only have a big off and scratch the new finish. They are battle scars. If I ever sell the frame I will take all the tape off and give it a quick spray with some better lacquer.
